Not that it's that important but Usami is no longer with bayern. He's with Hoffenheim (which is terrible).

Oh, I thought he was on loan from Bayern. I see he's still contracted to Gamba Osaka. Hoffenheim look like regulation candidates, but he did play alright against Freiberg, scoring a goal.

Excuse me, but do you seriously have the fricking Croatian League above the SPL?

They are not above, but in the same tier. Did you not read the caveat? I just didn't write out Scottish, because there are a lot of leagues in this tier.

I'd say that they are doing something we should be looking at closely, at the very least.

They promote technical ability to the youth. We still stress winning and athletic ability.

I'm a Takashi Usami fan but Jupp Heynckes wasn't. Gamba Osaka loaned him to Bayern then he secured another loan with Hoffenheim. I think Hoffenheim may be interested to keep him because he seems pretty intent on playing in Germany.

So, basically, 'athletic ability'.

So, generally speaking for the group, it seems as if we have reached at least a top nine in some order.

England
Spain

(small gap)
Germany
Italy

(gap)
France
Portugal
Russia
Holland
Ukraine

(gap)

This is wrong, but we're not going to get into it for the umpteenth time.

Someone said some stupid shite earlier about neither RM or FCB making the Champion's League final, hence, this order. I would submit 1 -4, in favor of the fricking UEFA champion. SMH, just SMH.

ETA Sorry, Europa League.

I prefer 1A and 1B, Dandy.

That was me and I said that the only reason it is in that order is because the trophy with the big ears is in England. There are no quantifiable reasons to justify one league over the other, so England gets the nod right now due to the CL and parity. But really, #1 and #2 could be arbitrarily assigned to either league and it wouldn't bother me.

I agree with this for Europe with the exception of Ligue 1 which I think probably has a lot more depth than the others in that tier?

I'd put them a bit higher for the same reason that the gap is small between Spain/England and Italy/Germany, namely that there's not a lot of difference once you get past the superpowers at the top.

Depth is also where UEFA ratings really don't tell us anything at all since a league benefits much more from a couple of quality sides (which also take Europa League seriously) than from having solid, competitive sides mid to lower table.

Shaktar and Kiev are very good sides but don't they absolutely dominate that league. Similar for Portugal. . . However, France has quite a few more clubs with the potential to rise and fall.

It's difficult to compare non-European leagues but I would imagine that Brazil's Serie A is at least as strong as Eredivisie and others in this tier.

If you're talking about general parity, I agree that the Ukraine is fairly balanced.

I'll go look at some history of the league, but wouldn't imagine either have finished outside of the top 2 in that league for probably 20 years.

Between the top 2 and the rest of the league though, I would imagine the drop off would be pretty big, regardless of point totals.

I don't really watch the Ukrainian League enough to know too much but do think Shaktar and Kiev have been 1 or 2 for the entire time I've known the league existed (back to the early 90s).

I do have a good friend who's a huge Kiev fan that I talk football with and he's always commenting about having no idea how the teams will do in CL simply because they dominate matches so much domestically.

My point was simply that Ligue 1 is solidly a Tier above leagues like that simply because they have much better clubs down through the table.

Ligue 1 is probably the number 1 feeder league for the big leagues right now.

Yeah and combined with the fact that they have more clubs with enough support/history to keep sending somewhat different CL and EL representatives along with better TV distribution, makes them a cut above the others they're being lumped in with in my mind.

I'd also say Brazil's Serie A is as good as any of those leagues in the last tier above.

Dynamo Kiev has always been the king I believe.

Shakhtar's rise coincides with the rise of petroleum production, and specifically, the pipeline(s), running through the Ukraine (I never heard of them, only Dynamo, until very recently).
