Random fact of the day: Sean Connery almost played for Man Utd

Connery was a keen footballer, having played for Bonnyrigg Rose in his younger days. He was offered a trial with East Fife. While on tour with South Pacific, Connery played in a football match against a local team that Matt Busby, manager of Manchester United, happened to be scouting. According to reports, Busby was impressed with his physical prowess and offered Connery a contract worth £25 a week immediately after the game. Connery admits that he was tempted to accept, but he recalls, "I realised that a top-class footballer could be over the hill by the age of 30, and I was already 23. I decided to become an actor and it turned out to be one of my more intelligent moves."[28][29]

25k a week? That seems like it would have been a ton back then, no?

No, £25
Avg yearly salary in the UK was ~less than 1/2 that in 1953

Ha ok, shows how far the game has come. My head immediately assumed thousand. 25 seems just as crazy as 25k though.

Andy Murray was offered a contact with Rangers. Guess he made the right choice.

My biggest disappointment in reading this is that I can't purchase a Sean Connery jersey as a result, but then again, he wouldn't be THE Sean Connery either.

Sean was also a huge Celtic fan who changed allegiances to Rangers several years ago. When I worked for him in the late 1990's he still had all of the Celtic and SFA people in his rolodex. We used to talk football everyday he was in town and when he first discovered my loyalty to Leeds his immediate response was: "Now that's a proper football club." (say this in your best Sean Connery accent)

Guess that decision wasn't quite as intelligent as turning down football to become an actor.

I don't like namedropping but I felt it was appropriate in this case seeing that the topic concerned a person I know quite well. Anyway, I worked as part of his development staff at Fountainbridge Films (his film production company) for two years when I lived in Los Angeles. As for him possibly playing for the Scum, I don't remember him ever mentioning it to me. Maybe he knew how I would react being a Leeds supporter.
We regularly discussed Leeds, Liverpool, and Scottish football (Celtic, Rangers, etc.). Sean was a great person to work for, by the way. I accumulated some great stories during those years.
