It's just one year out of the prem and he's getting total control and a fan base who worships him in

Good for him, I think he'll actually do pretty well there.

I'm not saying Newcastle won't bounce right back up, but acting like it's a certainty is a disrespect to the most savage league in the world.

If a team lead by a 33 year old Joey Barton can win that league, this Newcastle team with Rafa should cruise if they just handle their business.

The Championship is typically very balanced and a lot of fun to watch because of it, but the quality tends to be overrated IMO

I hope Rafa stays and Mike Ashley convinces the board to give Rafa what he wants.

Also, if he stays I secretly hope he will look at some of the young US players to add to NUFC. This could be a great time to sign or bring in on loan a young US defender.

Agreed, watching Yeldin play for Sunderland was nauseating

Big Sam sending Newcastle packing was a glorious thing to witness. Bye.

We'll be back next year & Sunderland will be down without the free 6 points from Newcastle

You keep saying that. Sunderland only needed 4 points from Newcastle this year and has lost 1 match since March 1st.

Well there seems to be a lot of smoke on both sides about a return.

Can yall afford to keep most of the roster or is Rafa expected to overhaul it anyway?

What about the 3 years before that?

Sunderland has been living on the edge for quite awhile and sooner rather than later the music is going to stop without any chairs left. When it does they'll be far less likely to come straight back up than Newcastle.

There will be a few changes but it sounds like Rafa wants to keep a majority of the squad as is and many want to stay. Perez, Krul, Townsend, and Mitro have public statements saying as much and now that Ashley has apparently agreed to give Rafa total control there's reason to be optimistic. We'll see if the deal to keep him gets done but if it does the future is bright.

Rafa Benitez and Newcastle have struck a deal to see him remain as manager, according to Sky sources.

A three-year deal is expected to be announced later on Wednesday which will contain written assurances for the Spaniard on full control of player recruitment and budgets set for the summer and winter transfer windows.
