Question about soccer teams

I never understood why soccer team's away kits are alot of times totally different colors than their primary colors (which they wear with their home kits). Example - Arsenal. ?

Mostly tradition. That's the easiest explanation.

Also to ensure they can wear one or the other to avoid looking too much like an opponents kit.

That 3rd SKC kit is sweet but yeah they need something different like red, yellow, green or whatever. Portland has done it right with a red away kit but this year it's a bit ugly. They still use green a lot on the road since only Portland and Seattle have green kits.

My dad, who has started watching soccer with me a lot more recently, asked this same thing yesterday while watching the City game (even though City is a bad example of this, since they have both black and gold in their crest). Anyways, he thought it should be like American sports how they always have team colors.

Seems a ton of American teams are black moreso than their traditional colors now.

Especially in college football. NBA teams started doing the black alternate jersey in the 90s, too.
Fwiw, I do like how we can see teams both playing in non-white jerseys more frequently in soccer.

Most clubs have been wearing whatever color shirts since before "branding" as we know it now existed. They didn't necessarily have "club colors" back then. They just happened to wear certain colors. Of course now certain colors are associated with certain clubs but that's why third and away kits can often be colors not necessarily associated with that club.

The concept of "Change" or "Away" strips is over a hundred years old, before fans really travelled to away games or before games were televised. So, it wasn't really important. All that mattered was that they were different for the ref and the fans in the stands. They would often just get the cheapast shirt that contrasted with their primary shirt.
