But you cannot tell me with a straight face that Benny Howedes is a better right back than Fabian Johnson

last night i asked if he'd start for Germany and people told me to ask you

Well, Löw is a weird dude so I don't know if he'd start, but is he one of the best 3 or so available fullbacks in Germany? I think so.

Johnson would start and Brooks would get caps at some point in his career. A more mature Jones would have gotten 20+ caps as well.

Johnson isn't a great defender; good, but not great. He's a good fullback, who is much more adept at providing the overlap, than marking the opposing winger.
Gladbach barely uses him in a defensive role. While, he's always been seen as a great defender for us, because we've had such shite fullbacks (outside of the gawd Cherundolo).
For the millionth time, Klinsmann is fielding a player out of position, when he could be of much greater use in another role.

I don't know if Jones would have gotten many caps because his career coincided with Michael Ballack's later years and Bastian Schweinsteiger and Sami Khedira's rise and then Toni Kroos's emergence.
John Brooks would absolutely get some caps as a young center back who's been really in form.

Yeah I agree with all of that but I think Fabian is still a good enough option at fullback to where he'd get caps there. Benny Howedes is more of a center back and Lars Bender is a defensive mid and Joshua Kimmich is a center mid and they've all been playing right back since Lahm has moved inside/retired.
Germany likes the fullbacks to overlap and get forward, the goal they just scored came from Hector overlapping Draxler and sending a ball into the box, and I think Fabs would kill it as a right back in that formation.

I think we need him in the offensive third a lot right now, and yeah his defending is meh at times and he switches off too frequently. Klinsmann needs to learn to trust guys like Villafana or Lichaj to play left back so that Johnson could play that position he rocked this year in the bundesliga.

I've been arguing for Villafana at LB and Fabs at LM or RM. But I'm an American so I don't understand soccer like Herr Klinsmann

Muller simply plays with an unrivaled determination.

We need help offensively. It will relieve pressure on the back line in a much needed way. He would help us maintain possession further up the field. Right now however we maximize his weaknesses (defense, tracking back, challenges in the air) and negate his strengths (scoring, taking on defenders, putting in crosses).

Fab played all through the German youth set up so its no far fetched to think he would get Sr call ups.
This match is boring as frick

Fab will never see the midfield until we actually start calling up guys who could take over LB long term. Right now, Fab's cover at the spot is Edgar Castillo. Seriously, what the frick?
I post that tweet about Lichaj because it's so fricking inexplicable that Lichaj has been called up so sparingly under Jurgen. I remember watching him in the 2011 Gold Cup and being so excited that we found a LB to force out Bornstein.
Now granted, Lichaj definitely fell off with injury after that, but he worked his way back and Jurgen straight up ignored him to the point, where it's almost too late to try and groom him to be our LB this cycle.

Since Klinsmann took over Eric Lichaj has played 12,700 minutes of injury-free soccer at LB & RB in the EPL & English Championship
