Really? Not me ...
why not?
Why can't we mix the two styles or create our own brand of soccer?
And for all the talk about our athleticism, I don't really know what that means. We can run down a long ball, and then what? What about teams that break us down by keeping possession and force us to chase the game? We don't cope well with any of that.

yeah elisha i was thinking of el gringo when i edited for utilize. i remember being so pissed when we played "bob ball" when he even got a shot at playing time.

ut giveaways in your half by deep lying central midfielders lead to goals. Two in one half is too many.
There's a reason Rico Clark is a Pariah.

It seems I can think of two switches by Jones that were more ambitious than anything Bradley tried.
He has a slightly better angle when switching, but I was referring to forward passes. Bradley tries different passes in an effort to combine and move forward. Jones moves the ball side to side, or switches effectively, which is what I think is the role he's been assigned to play.

Jones is one of our better passers when he's on. Your center mids can't be scared to try to spray passes.

hell we can't keep relying on our athleticism b/c our young guys aren't that athletic

They aren't huge, but yeah they are athletic. Very quick and strong.

His passing hasn't been the problem. He's had some silly giveaways deep in our half that seem uncharacteristic for a player that seems so smooth on the ball.

Mike, Jozy, and Juan are incredibly athletic

That came off the wrong way. I don't mind him switching the field and looking for good balls, not at all, but when he's under some pressure he just needs to make the simple play and avoid the give aways.

I think it's sort of a fake label we keep placing on our players to justify their other shortcomings.
Onyewu is huge and athletic! So what?
Clint Dempsey IMO is the best american player going and he's not more athletic than players from other countries, he's just a better soccer player.

That's a mental thing. Must be his American side shining through
Posted on 6/7/11 at 8:10 pm to hendersonshands
let me rephrase, our B squad is not athletic
Posted on 6/7/11 at 8:10 pm to crazy4lsu
either way we're nitpicking, Jones and Bradley both played well that half.
Dempsey spent a lot of time drifting inside and Bocanegra doesn't get up the field well enough to fill that space. Really my only complaint that half.

You're taking it the wrong way. What we have now over other teams is athleticism. If you want to see more technical play, you'll have to probably wait 5-10 more years but with what we have now, we need to use it. Jozy is a big strong guy, think of his goal vs Spain in the Confed Cup when he outmanned Puyol.

We are more athletic than technical I agree, but I've never bought that we are more athletic than most other good teams. Ghana for instance looked clearly more athletic than the US IMO. I just don't see it as any clear advantage.

I know what you're saying.
What I'm saying is that my sincere hope is that every one of our youth teams is being drilled in playing more attractive, and free slowing soccer. Keeping the ball becoming our primary objective.
It would seem logical that if our 'better athletes' could become better at keeping the ball and developing technical skill, then we'd be ahead of the curve, no?
