Ream and Lichaj are indeed puzzling exclusions.

Probably our two brightest young defenders, both of whom were playing regularly in the EPL.

Granted their teams were terrible, but still...

I didn't know this. Thanks for the heads up.

Lichaj yes, Ream no

Lichaj is our LB of the future, Ream has performed terribly every MNT call up and he was mediocre/good for Bolton, needs to get more consistent. With that said, I fully expect Ream to be a big part of WC qualifying in next summer's hexagonal. A long season in the Championship playing a ton of games will do wonders for his game.

Wrong. He is much better at RB and he can be a stop gap at LB until we find a permanent solution. As far as I'm concerned lichaj is dolos replacement on the right and timmy "freakazoid" chandler can go frick himself

The article made me think a bit, and I even went as far as to comment on it.

In response to this first comment from someone named Eurofan:

quote:

As for Sasha he plays in Belgium! A league where is nowhere near the bundesliga, premier league, la liga, ligue 1, hell not even the Scottish premier league! Until that guy joins a league of prestige than maybe, if he earns a regular spot than he can come and have a shot at the National team, until than hell no!

quote:

Eurofan, saying the Scottish Prem League is better than the Belgian league is a joke. The Jupiler League comes in as the 12th ranked league in Europe according to the UEFA coefficients, whereas the Scottish league ranks well behind at 18th. The Scottish league is actually ranked behind the Cypriot League now. So yeah.

Also, Lichaj and Beasley not getting the call ups seems to hurt us the most given our lack of depth at those positions. Both players clearly deserved the call up.

I still feel bad for Sacha, though. Is Zusi really better? I doubt that. Maybe as a set-piece taker, but that would be it.

I honestly, think Ream's best position for him would be CDM. However, he really needs to develop at CB. USMNT really needs some depth there. frick we really need some depth everywhere, outside of CDM.

One name I haven't heard much about lately is Alejandro Bedoya. He has a motor. Rangers need to use him or sell his arse.

I agree. Lichaj will have to play LB for now though. We are always fricked at LB.

FWIW I'll take Klejstan over Edu, all day everyday.

Edu/Jones/Bradley/Beckerman = same position.

I wouldn't have brought all those players in and compromise depth in other areas. But, I'm also not the USMNT coach.

Interesting, could you elaborate?

I see both as holding central midfielders that are capable of going foward.

I agree. The problem is Beckerman is clearly the weak link in that list but klinsmann has a raging mega-boner for him

Could somebody photoshop dreads onto Kljestan in a US kit? May be the only way we ever see him in the red, white and blue under klinsmann. IMO Kljestans rep with the US was seriously damaged by the fact that he was one of bobs favorites and he was mostly used incorrectly on the wing.

Edu covers ground, breaks up play and is a set piece threat in both boxes

Kljestan is about linking the defense and the forwards. He is more of a forward passer and a pass before the pass kind of guy.

Both can be useful but it really depends on what kind of holding midfielder the team and formation require.

For instance if jones and Bradley are starting I would prefer a Kljestan or feilhaber next to them. If were talking Torres and Bradley I think a player like edu or beckerman makes more sense

I'd say those are valid points.

Anyway, if Jurgen is set on the 4-3-3/4-5-2, not starting Jones and Bradley equates to leaving one of our top 4 or 5 field players on the bench.

Based on this roster

-----------Altidore-------------

Torres-------Dempsey--------Donovan

--------Jones------Bradley------

Johnson--Boca---Gooch----Cherundolo

-------------Howard--------------

I honestly think though, for me at least.

You bring in Klejstan, let him play the 10 spot. Slide Dempsey to the left. And let Bradley and Kleghstan and Dempsey and Klejstan interchange positions as they see fit.

I'd expect jones and Bradley to start any important games. Don't think jones needs to play every friendly. after 2014 he will almost surely retire from international play. It makes sense to rotate in some of our other depth at CM to give them experience. No need for Jones to play every game.

This would definitely be interesting. I don't expect Torres to start on the left wing though fwiw

Just trying to piece it together.

He certainly doesn't provide much, if any, cover if we play F. Johnson at LB.

I hate when we isolate Dempsey on a wing or as a L/R Mid...he always seems to do the most damage when hes positioned more centrally

As for holding mids/CDM, bradley has cemented his role as the guy in front of the back 4, but we have yet to see any consistency in a mid that is able to link attacks to the front players, FWIW i would like to see this

----Altidore/Gomez-----

----Williams----Dempsey----Donovan----

-------------Torres-------------------
----------------------Bradley---------

---Johnson--Bocanegra--Onyewu--Cherundolo--
------------------Howard-------------------

Williams is my question mark here and I would like to see Gomez get a game or two over altidore in this 5 game stretch

Johnson can play on the wing and is naturally a midfielder. Williams is a center midfielder

Instead of trying to force Johnson into defense and move Torres or Williams out of position to the left wing why not just put Johnson there? I'd say that's his natural position
