Villa gonna resign Guzan ? I saw they "released" him but still trying to work on something?
Not unless we sell Given and offer little big brad a shot at the #1 shirt.
I actually think given is very over rated and I hate that we gave him a 5 year deal on big money considering he was 35 and injury prone. Guzan would be on much lower wages and I think given is only marginally better so if we could reinvest those wages in another position I would be very happy.
So I would be happy if that happened but I think given is here to stay and guzan will sign for a new club this summer. He should have some options after his very solid stint in the startin XI while given was out.

Without Given, you're in the Championship.

I concur. I wanted Villa to sell Given so fricking bad. You know he is hurt or had an injury scare, this past week. . preparing for euro's.

I knew you would comment on my criticism of given. And fwiw you're wrong.
Yes, he did save us some points this year and he is one of the best shot stoppers in the world. I'm not saying he's not a very good keeper. He is a great shot stopper for sure but the other aspects of his play are well below average for an epl starter.
If guzan was the starter rather than given we would have given up fewer goals from set pieces and corners this year, which was our biggest defensive weakness.
I have never seen a keeper so unwilling or unable to come off his line. Other teams would drop a corner right into the 6 yard box and given just sits on his line and refuses to ever come for anything.

Guzan is almost as good as Givens and a much cheaper solution. IMO.
Anyways, Nordsjaelland is up 2-0. Meaning Parkhurst is in line for the Danish title.
ETA: That's 4 Americans who have won their league title. Parkhurst (Danish), Kljestan (Belgium), Gomez (Mexico), some 28 yr old dude in the Isreali league

Awesome Read. Ives interviewing Klinsmann
On Eric Lichaj:
On Kljestan:
On Tim Ream:
quote:
“First half we did a bit more of a 4-3-2-1, a Christmas tree system, and in the second we did a 4-4-2, some times as a diamond and some times more flat, some coming over the wings because they were just standing there and closing everything down.”
quote:
Klinsmann downplayed the notion that the large number of forwards in camp suggests the team is going to play more of a 4-3-3 in upcoming matches.
“It’s not necessarily based on how many wingers are out there, or more inside players,” Klinsmann said. “We will see who is really in the best condition and best shape, and who sparks it up, and then we’ll make our calls.
On Eric Lichaj:
quote:
“It came in too late for him, but it’s good that he broke in (at Aston Villa), “Klinsmann said of Lichaj. “If you look at certain positions, who are they kind of front-runners. Look at the central midfielder position. Michael Bradley, a Jermaine Jones, a Maurice Edu, a Kyle Beckerman.
quote:
Klinsmann wouldn’t come out and say that Lichaj was still behind the pack at fullback, but pointed to him needing more experience.
“All the outside positions we have a special eye on obviously,” Klinsmann said. “What he needs now is games. And Bedoya needs games. Who knows what happens now at Rangers. We have kids up in Scandinavia like Josh Gatt. We’ll observe it. That’s the good thing now about having Andy Hertzog and Mattias Hammann. They are all over the place in Europe. They go to those places. In Nordsdjaelland, they went to see Michael Parkhurst play against Clarence Goodson. It helps having a presence in Europe now with these guys, to look after them.”
On Kljestan:
quote:
Michael Bradley, a Jermaine Jones, a Maurice Edu, a Kyle Beckerman.
“Then you have a Sacha Kljestan that you have to tell ‘You know what, sorry. You’ve had a good season but you’re not passing one of these four right now with their elements’. Then you don’t do them a favor to call them in.
“Like in Italy, it worked out great but we had to play (Kljestan) in a wide position and that’s not his position. He kind of sacrificed himself for the group,” Klinsmann said. “But now, bringing him here to be a fifth guy of two positions, then you’d rather him have a good break after a long season. That’s sort of how you juggle things with these players.”
On Tim Ream:
quote:
“Tim’s situation is similar to Sacha’s,” Klinsmann said. “They are players who are right there, but they can’t pass the four guys in front of them. Right now, Tim is not passing Gooch, Carlos, Clarence and Geoff Cameron. They are our four players locked in there as of today.

Only thing I can figure is that Jordan Jefferson taught Beckerman how to hold a coach hostage...

Do his thoughts on lichaj make sense to anybody? If so please explain...
He says this about lichaj who started every game after regaining fitness for Villa but he call in Morales? This is dissapointing
Oh and the quotes about beckerman

No. It makes no sense. It's pretty disappointing. The only thing he can say is he didn't play as much this year because of his injury.

I enjoy these thread as most of you guys follow the roster movements of the team more than I do.
In considering our roster, does it seem like a simple 4-4-2 diamond midfield may get our best players on the pitch in their more comfortable positions?
Jones / Williams? / Beckerman in front of the back line with Bradley on one side and Edu or Torres on the other depending on how much steel vs link play we need against a certain opponent? Edu and Bradley both cover enough ground to get forward and support the the attack.
Dempsey at the trequartista with Donovan supporting Jozy?

Only a serie A fan would start 5 holding center midfielders in the midfield
Edu and Bradley will not play on the wings.
As far as 442 it only makes sense to me if dempsey is played up top. We have a stacked midfield but are very weak up top so I think 4231 or 433 are much more likely.

I have always liked the 4-2-3-1 Jurgy has rolled out from time to time.

Had to bro, there is no one else to put there.

Another thing interesting is that he named Cameron as one of our top CBs. However, Cameron has made 3 caps and there is less footage of him than Ream.
I don't understand that. I've never been a big Ream supporter. I've always said Gonzalez is 10x greater. BUT Cameron ? Klinsmann is sold on him already ?

You're not familiar with the player so you throw him in the position were the weakest at? Have you ever seen him play? Do you know his position? Are you aware that hes a right footed center back?
Johnson, boca, parkhurst, lichaj, Heath Pearce, Castillo, Williams, cherundolo and Cameron are all ahead of Morales at LB for me.
Morales has 4 more starts than I do as a professional soccer player.

Cameron has the best tools of any CB we have. He doesn't have the experience at that position that others do though.
I'm not reading too much into klinsis comments mostly because they don't make any sense to me an he seems to do a lot of talking without really saying anything. Gonzales injury was unfortunate because I think he would be a starter for us by now I rate him as well.
Ream not being called in is a mystery to me. Granted he's been pretty awful for the US in his limited appearances but his form at Bolton warranted a callup IMO.
