Ah gotcha. Yeah when we switched from school year to birth year a few years ago it messed a lot up. My daughter just played-up a year because we liked the coach more.

ECNL/EPNL is more established, but GA/MLS Next is a higher level and who the top tier team from each club plays for (which is the directive).

I played a year around 95/96
I remember it being Lafayette Comets and Lafreniere dominated. If you weren't involved or connected to those teams you had a hard time getting anything out of it. And being from Shreveport was a double whammy. Not to mention the travel always being down south.

Growing up if you weren't from Lafayette you had very little chance at making the squad. Like others have said it was all politics. Shame it seems the same decades later.

From what I've heard it depends where you live. ECNL is where the best players in the southeast go but GA is bigger/better out west.
Our club is a GA club and we lose some girls every year who want to play ECNL for recruiting purposes.

I don’t push or make her do anything she doesn’t want when it comes to soccer but I’m all for her wanting to better/challenge herself. I want her to be a kid still bc IMO it’s hard for kids to truly be kids in todays world but when opportunities arise I ask her if it’s somethings she’d like to do mainly so she can make her decision if it’s something she wants. With that being said, I do know there will be a time that her and I will have to sit down once she’s older to see where she wants to take this. Either she wants to play bc it’s fun or she wants to play in the college ranks. She is still about 5yrs away from that conversation though.

Unfortunately, I think it's a lot closer than you think. Unless she is an elite, elite level athlete you aren't going to be able to wait until she's 15-16 to decide if she wants to take it seriously or not.

I'm late to the thread, but I did play ODP growing up. I would echo some of the sentiments of others. It depends on what you are hoping to get out of it.
1. If you want her to get good experience, I'd recommend it. It was a great experience where I got to compete with many great players from other states who were on the next level compared to playing against club teams in the gulf coast and Texas.
2. If you want it to get her noticed by scouts, I would not recommend. College scouts recruit at college showcase tournaments and Regionals (I assume they still do Regionals for state champions). My brothers and I played ODP and that is not where we got seen by college scouts.
All in all, it was a good experience that I would recommend if money isn't an issue. I got to play with and against kids who went on to play professionally.

Boys have ECNL too.
From what I understand it's basically just two different entities and each club is affiliated with one or the other based on a number of different factors.
Competition levels are overall probably pretty close and vary depending on geographical location.

Basically this.
ECNL/EPNL are sanctioned under US Club Soccer
GA/MLS Next are sanctioned under USYS.

I played regional ODP in the late 80s/early 90s.
Seems to be a cash grab at this point. At the club where I assign/referee, we had several girls try out for the GA ODP program, get cut, then go over to Alabama and make theirs.
