Out of that entire list none are geographically close to me other then maybe DC, and even then that's a stretch.
I plan on just watching different teams play and try to get a feel for the fans/clubs/players and then base my decision off that.
Is there anything in the MLS like the Yankees so I know who to avoid off the jump?

MLS just announced the 20th team, NYCFC - a joint venture between the Yankees and Manchester City. 
Rivalries:
Portland/Seattle/Vancouver
Houston/Dallas
NY/DC (and to a lesser extent, the other "I-95" teams, NE and Philly)
NY/CHI (sort of)
San Jose/LA
LA/Chivas
Colorado/Real Salt Lake
Montreal/Toronto(? )
So far, nothing has really developed with the midwestern teams (KC/CLB /CHI).
The crowds make the SEA/POR/VAN rivalries exciting, but for on field play, give me LA/SJ, DAL/HOU or (especially, I feel) COL/RSL.

Anyone ever heard anything on the MLS adding a major team down south? I'd imagine Atlanta or Nashville would both have good markets

Arthur Blank (Falcons owner) *wants* a team in Atlanta, but:
- Atlanta is (or can be) an apathetic market
- No current plan for a soccer specific stadium, which is supposed to be a criteria for MLS expansion... but NYCFC doesn't currently have a SSS plan either, soooooo.....
I also strongly suggest you subscribe to MLS Live. It's $59.99 for the season, for every MLS game, streamed through mobile/tablet/PC/Roku and (I think) Xbox 360. It also has an archive, so you can start watching some of the rivalry games today, if you choose.

Your in the same boat as me, no MLS clubs near TN, you just need to watch MLS for a bit and choose the club you get the best vibe from. For me it was the Seattle Sounders. Good luck in choosing!

Eh, SKC and Houston are sorta becoming rivals, though not based on location but on the competitiveness of the games and the number of big games between the teams recently.
And I would put SKC either with or just below Portland and Seattle as far as fan bases go...

Was always a dc united fan, but really houston is the closest team and have an awesome stadium. If i was going to go to games in washington, oregon or new york. Id rather save my money and go see Arsenal in london.
