new to soccer and question about leagues

First off I decided to be an Arsenal fan recently and really want to get into the sport, but I have a couple of questions.
1) Diff between the EPL and Champions League?
2) Is Arsenal a good team to pull for? I mean, from what I can gather, they are not a basement dweller and they have a big rivalry with the Tottenham Hotspur.
Any other info would be greatly appreciated - such as what months do the seasons run etc.

EPL is just one of the main leagues in europe. France has their own along with every other country. Top teams in each country's league goes to the Champions League which is a European wide tournament.

Arsenal is definetly a good team to root for. But why limit yourself to just EPL. Root for a team in Spain's league, French league, etc. don't just settle for a EPL team. I would recommend finding a player you like watching and then choose a team, or choose a team all your friends like.
I liked watching Bale so I like Real Madrid
And all my friends like Liverpool so I chose them to like
But in FIFA 14 I like playing as Juventus, so I like watching them as well.

Well if you root for Arsenal get ready for a wild ride. This season they led the league for nearly half of the season and now they are just hoping to finish in the top 4. Oh yeah they play in the FA Cup final next month and if they win this will be their fist time winning silverware since 2005.

Well, I thought about the other leagues/countries as well, but kinda wanted to stick with one league in Europe and thought the EPL would be the best to root for.

Depends on who you ask. But it's pretty much the easiest one to follow here in the states thanks to NBC Sports.

I took the approach (may be the wrong approach) of rooting for a team and league kinda like college football. I'm an SEC fan (EPL), so why would I root for the B1G (Spanish league)?
Like I said, I'm new at this and I might be looking at it wrong, but I had to make it make sense in my mind lol

One thing I rember having trouble with is that with the champions league you qualify this year to play in it next year. Totally foreign idea to American sports

That is a point, I failed to make. Seems as though the EPL gets more coverage in the US than the MLS - for obvious reasons.

Right. The top leagues in the world would be:
EPL (Great Britain), La Liga (Spain), Bundesliga (Germany)
Depending on the year and who you ask, one of those 3 are going to be named as the top league with the other 2 following closely behind. Ater that, you had the French Ligue 1 and Serie A from Italy.
New TV deals in the coming years will make it easier to follow other leagues. I got interested in EPL after the 2010 World Cup. Then I started learning more about other leagues and pay a little attention to the Bundesliga now as well. I'm trying to lock down a team to root for there right now...but it's just difficult with limited TV viewing options.

Arsenal had an excellent shot at winning the EPL this year if their entire team didn't break every bone in their bodies during the second half of the season. Now they're scratching to remain in the top 4... and the top 4 teams qualify for next year's Champion's League.

International league systems are composed of multiple tiers. With respect to the EPL, the 3 teams that finish in the bottom 3 of the standings at the end of the year are "relegated" to the league below the EPL - the Sky Bet Championship League - for the following season. In the Championship League, the top 2 teams at the end of a season automatically are promoted up to the EPL. Leicester City and Burnley have clinched the top 2 spots and will be in the EPL next season.
Teams 3-6 in the Championship hold a 4-team playoff for the final promotion spot.
If you really want to know a lot about the English football system including the cup competitions, I recommend Wikipedia. Start with reading the entry about the EPL and then click other things linked in there to learn more about other things like the FA Cup, League Cup, Champions League, etc...
