Terrible ball from Affelay. That should have been 1-0

It's not often you get to hear Paul McCartney call a football match, now is it?

It sounds weird to say this about a team that made the World Cup finals (and have looked pretty good so far), but the Dutch are just kind of strangely put together as a team.

The two central midfielders are so deep, Sneijder drops deep to play make because they can't, Afellay stays wide and plays balls in which is fine but there's only one guy (Van Persie) who he can cross to most of the time.

well de jong and van bommel are 2 dedicated defensive mids, so that's not shocking

MVB comes up on occassion

well they play a lone striker

Thanks.

RVP still doesn't have his shooting touch quite right, but he's making some great runs finding space behind the German backline.

The Dutch midfield is looking incredibly strong right now. German midfield isn't really moving the ball about, there is no movement from the players, and they are sitting back very deep pretty much stuck in their own half.

Oh wow, I just saw that horrid cross by Affelay. That was terrible.

Shame the Dutch are down, just like the Denmark match. They are pretty much downright dominating play but find themselves behind, and keep missing scoring chances.

They're just too defensive. One guy has to push up a bit more, Van Bommell might do it a bit but not enough.

A lot of teams who play a lone striker have more options in the box. One of the central midfielders will usually push up more, the attacking midfielder will get into the box more, the other wing player, etc. On most of Holland's moves its been Van Persie and Van Persie only.

Great goal.
