If you were the coach and you were coaching a middle school team and your opponent played a 4-3-3 formation, what formation would you play? Both teams have 4-5 club players, however the 4-3-3 team has 3 attackers who are all club players and definitely stronger than your defenders. On the flip side, their defense is also weak. Midfield is probably a wash. Remember, this is middle school, so half the kids on the field are not very knowledgeable, so you've got to keep it as simple as possible. What formation would you use to go against their 4-3-3?

4-4-2 with 2 row of 4 as your strong defense and you play American long ball up top, son!

4-2-3-1, sit back stay sound on defense and hit them on the counter

or 4-4-1-1 and just press the shite out of them and run a high line. Force them into mistakes and hit them on the counter. B/c if their best players are playing on the wings and at striker they will be easy to hit on the break.

If only a few kids even play club soccer, the team probably isn't going to hold the shape very well regardless of what formation you set. I would put one (or two) of your best players at center back and urge the outside backs not to get too high up or out of position.

Id probably just go with 442 and tell one of the center mids he needs to hold and stay back in front of the defenders to help out as well. Put your scrappiest guy on their best winger's side so even if he doesnt have ball skills he can disrupt their attack.

This. 4-4-2 with the dead Stopper Position. Put your best Midfielder at Stopper so he can disrupt attack and start the counter.

W-M always fricks with people and can bog their attackers down. There's always a defender nearby and it muddies the middle of the field.

Ain't nobody in middle school going to beat you by tearing down the wings and firing in crosses. Let them have all of that space they want.

They probably will try and cut inside rather than fire in crosses, but it doesn't change the fact that they should stay very compact. If your players can keep the two banks of four cohesive then you can shift pressure to the ball side and try and press against the touch lines but if they can't hold formation then just keep it tight around the 18 yard box

That's going to be the plan. We actually have a good goalie. I figure we'd rather take our chances with them shooting from outside the box.

I'd highly suggest 3 at the back with your best player at sweeper.

Exactly what I was thinking. Anything more complicated than that for the team you describe is going to cause lots of organizational problems.

That would be the plan. I'm thinking 4-4-2 with a diamond midfield. (2 wings, an attacking mid and holding mid). Put a club player as attacking mid, holding mid, and as one of the defenders. The midfielders would do fine. It's the defenders and convincing them to let the forwards have the sideline, just don't let them cut inside of you. Their instinct is to stab at the ball and that is going to hurt them, cause the forwards are all 3 good enough to get by them if the defenders stab.

Yeah at that level we played 3-5-2 with a stopper. Your wing players stay up and the stopper comes back as your 4 th defender. He needs to be able to run though. Also helps if your best defender is at sweeper. At that level they shouldn't be tearing through the defense. Not in America any way.

If I'm being honest I don't recall anyone running 2 banks of 4 when we were young. Just wasn't necessary.

Coaches would say stop stabbing like OJ. This was in the 90s though.

Just curious - is your middle school season just beginning? Ours was basically Dec/Jan/and little bit of Feb while club ball breaks for high school.

+1... Practice jockeying heavily with your defense so that your midfield can get back and help on defense

It's Ascension Parish. There are 8 feeder schools to the high schools and they play a 5 week season on Tues/Th evenings

I'd play a 4-3-3 and adjust, slightly, as US Soccer suggest right now.
