They buy down the current contract to make it so that the player can fit in the salary cap restrictions and take away the DP tag. Requires some forethought from the front office to have the space available for it.

It is rare for a European player to show interest in MLS thought, right?

No a ton of guys have come here on free transfers at the end of their careers for huge paydays

Most the time it’s a disaster

Just look at the highest paid players list the last few seasons

What would it take for a club to land Pulisic?

Probably a £40 million transfer fee, £150-200k a week in wages and Messi like marketing incentives

Bc going to MLS at this age would basically tank his career

How can MLS change in order to cultivate and attract top-tier talent?

Relocate to Italy

But yeah the big deal about Messi to MLS is that it gets them in the room with basically anyone else in the world they want. He’s a little closer to his prime than Pele or Beckham or Gerrard or Zlatan or Rooney was…

MLS has changed from developing and featuring US talent, to selling them off to Europe young and instead becoming the 2nd stop for young South American players to get some seasoning. Messi being here with only accelerate that I'm sure.
