I mean you literally cannot spike someone in the face. I'm sorry, you just can't. It's dangerous play and a red every time.
I'd agree with you if this was in the 6 or even 12 yard box... but in the outfield when Mane is clearly going for the ball... I think it's a yellow... it's unfortunate for Ederson, but it's a risk when you go for a 50/50 ball with your head...
Im okay with the red at the end of the day..

Do people on here not realize that intent is completely irrelevant? Have the announcers dumbed us down this much?
It doesn't matter where his eyes are......it was dangerous play the moment he puts his boot that high, regardless of what he is intending to do.
If that's called a yellow in any situation it would be the incorrect call.
ETA: Mane didn't mean anything by it, it wasn't intentional, clearly, but you absolutely cannot do that. It was completely reckless.

Not necessarily... if he is split second sooner Ederson is off... the fact Ederson got to it first forced the decision...

Pep pretty much reiterating it's a tough call

It should be interesting to see how Ederson reacts in the future being in the same situation. We'll see if he lowers his head again.

intent def matters
if he makes contact anywhere else thats a yellow or just a 50/50 collisions. Bad luck he makes contact with his head. If hes a split second earlier Ederson gets sent off. There is no way Mane knows the gk is going to try and play the ball with his head. He has a right to the ball just as much as the gk, esp outside the box.

Okay, that's a fair take on it. I mean you can't blame Mane for trying to go for it, but the leg extension I think is what got him. The still photo on Reddit is pretty bad.
But yeah, like you said if Ederson doesn't beat him it's likely a call going the other way.

No you don't understand the rules of the game
intent is used all the time when ref's make a decision
you can't even formulate a response to the rest of my post.

terrible red in dortmund/freiburg game
that play, happens nearly every soccer game, and 99% of the time not even a yellow.

Serious Foul Play: A tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality must be sanctioned as serious foul play.
Please SCH, explain to the lot of us how that challenge didn't endanger the player who was stretchered off?
Also, where does 'intent' make an appearance in that definition?

Intent doesn't matter. The post game guys literally just said this and I agree in this case.

Yea once his teammates see the replay they'll understand the red card. It was really bad
