Schalke just scored four goals and won at the Bernabeu and were eliminated.

Such a Schalke thing to do.

That's normal. It's the most insanely demanding stadium in the world

Don't know how long Ancelotti is going to push this whole, "It's a 4-4-2 defensively" thing when Gareth Bale is 20 secs late tracking back. Of course, he'll probably eventually come up with a solution that makes everyone look retarded. Hopefully, it comes early enough for RM to challenge for the league

Lol Modric is dead after this. No way he can ever play again.

Schalke had three 19 year olds on the pitch. Just let that sink in. What a match.

So we know who Bayern's three summer signings will be.

Crazy match, I really like Carlo but I would have LOVED for Robbie to pull that off.

I've missed most their recent matches but the general disinterest in defending of all of the "midfielders" in addition to Bale was a bit shocking. Arbeloa as well a few times in the first half. Real's defensive formation often seemed more an off-center 3-0-5-2 than 4-4-2.

The first half barrage wasn't really due to Shalke playing pinpoint passes through pressure but simply casually dribbling straight up to the area and finding 4 attackers being marked by only the 2 CBs time after time with little pressure on the passer.

I give Kroos and Isco a pass. Post-injury Khedira is awful. Lucas Silva has been a surprisingly useful addition. Ultimately, I think that they're truly burned out at this point in the season. Ancelotti requested a small squad which he rarely rotates. With the injuries they've had in that area, don't know why I'm surprised that they couldn't continue their level of effort and quality of play from the 1st half of the season

Didn't notice Arbeloa as much, but I usually expect him to add some amount of leadership and composure, mostly by kicking people who need to be kicked

I may be a bit unfair in picking him out but I was thinking of at least two instances where Real, mainly Bale, lost the ball and Arbeloa was jogging back while watching 2 Shalke players come from 20 meters behind, sprint right by him and overload the CBs.

The idea that the midfield's overworked seems on point. Playing without any defensive mid that effectively disrupts counters means a much higher work rate all around and that was multiplied by the numerous tailor-made give-aways just outside the area yesterday.

I would guess that Ancelotti gets it sorted out if given time but I would have thought having Khedira and Illaramendi while missing Modric would be sufficient (even if I've not seen enough of Illaramendi to decide whether he's top class or simply pretty good.)

I don't think you were. I was just focused upon Bale. Arbeloa's slow, and I'm not sure that he even has the legs to sprint up and down the field, though.

He's been playing Lucas Silva over both of them lately, which has surprised me. His squad selections have confused me at times, e.g., ignoring Casemiro.
