Abu Dhabi to be stripped of ownership. Seems to me the head of the supposed beast should be the one cut off and you force a sale with a massive financial penalty to them on the way out.

Supposedly, UAE has called the British govt and said if penalty is severe, they’ll withdraw a ton of investment and cooperation elsewhere, which is why I’m on record stating penalties won’t be severe whatsoever.

the English government is definitely involved, as are the tv networks with epl contracts

the best punishment to me is a huge fine dispersed amongst all of the teams involved in the epl during the time frame

points would be removed at the end of the year and they are forced down.

transfer ban for one full year (2 windows)

in effect this season would be gone, relegation clauses would be enacted so the players can leave, next season would be spent fighting back up and whatever happens, happens

in effect a two year penalty that could be more

You mean to tell me that even though City claim they aren't, they are owned by a government entity? Whodathunkit

i am sure you remember this exact type of punishment scenario happened in Italy with Juventus in 2006.

This is nothing like Calciopoli, though

That was direct cheating that influenced games directly, on the field of play

. I doubt they are suddenly running some squeaky clean org. I

Why?

The financing was necessary to overcome systemic barriers of entry of the EPL. Once those are overcome, they're a "big club" on equal footing.

Man City doesn't even have the highest wage bill and have you seen their net transfers the past 10 years? They're not even 5 top per transfermrkt

1. Tottenham (-911.40M)
2. Man U (-774.62M)
3. Arsenal (-724.49M)
4. Chelsea (-699.39M)
5. Liverpool (-699.13M)
6. Man City (-598.83M)

I don't think UAE would accept demotion. I don't know if the EPL would want demotion. That would possibly require decrease in the TV deal and would offset a lot of the fines.

Fines? Deductions? Sure. Especially this year.

holy shite

so roster management and improvement by cheating the salary rules doesnt directly affect the field of play? really?

but of course you miss the point, Juventus is a cornerstone member of Serie A and they got sent down and came right back up

message sent, message received

MC is still disputing the charges, the arrogance is unimaginable

MC is a johnny come lately in England football that has now damaged the League and its membership as much as they have promoted the League and its membership with their ill gotten gains on the world stage

they have set themselves up to be made an example of

interesting

then you must weigh the legitimacy and autonomy of the League itself vs the political power of a single ownership group

if I am the Saudis and Newcastle I am pretty pissed off at that scenario

KSA is politically and financially far more important to England than UAE

EPL placating the UAE and potentially negatively impacting the value of the KSAPIF investment into Newcastle is some serious boomerang shite right there

I seriously doubt there is a clause that would allow for a TV contract renegotiation for relegation of a club. Since relegation is a annual part of the process.

What makes Man city any different from Everton? Tottenham? Or West Ham?

You have got to stop using transfer market for any reliable wage data.

Per the UEFA 2025 report, City had the highest wages in football

Not to mention, if Newcastle cooked their books for almost a decade, they might actually get better. Instead they are consistently required to sell some of their best players because they ARE trying to comply with the rules in place.

Aston Villa is much in the same boat.

Some of the big windows at the end of Cities "cheating years" where they weren't complying with financial rules laid the foundation for the run they went on. KDB, Stones, Ohtamendi, Ederson, Silva, Walker, Sterling, Sane, Fernandinho, Laporte all bought in 2015-2018 time period

The problem for the EPL is that it's relied on TV revenue to systemically dominate the entire system. It's similar to the "if you owe the bank $100k they own you, but if you owe the bank $100M, you own the bank" scenarios. Similar to the SEC/Big10 in CFB.

Engaging in moves that hurt TV ratings is risky.

I know everybody online is trying to get their putative pound of flesh from Man City, but is the EPL really going to engage in more profane behavior than Man City simply because Man City defended themselves? That doesn't sound like a rational solution.

I give 0 fricks about Man City FWIW. My team is Real Madrid.

take the same scenario without the geopolitics angle and apply it to the NFL.

The Rams are CFC
The Chiefs are MC

The Rams have a very long history in the league, with recent success. They also acknowledge their cheating, have changed ownerships, and have fallen on their sword.

The Chiefs have almost no history for 60 years, then become the dominant force in the league post New England Patriots (ManU) for a decade. They refuse to acknowledge their cheating, they battle every single angle to defend themselves, and they are caught committing perjury in two separate trials in court.

how does the NFL handle that one?

If the league doesn’t punish them severely then that brings into question the veracity and authenticity of the league itself. That will directly affect the valuation of all of the teams in the league, which goes far beyond the simple value of a TV contract.

If Man city suddenly falls apart, and finds themselves naturally in relegation, the EPL will not renegotiate the contract just because a Premier team fell on hard times.

if you look at it in a political sphere, this could be taken as another example of Muslims coming into England and doing whatever they want and not playing by the rules. This stance could either lead to less stringent sanctions because the English government forces the EPL to bend the knee, or it could lead to much stronger sanctions than anyone realize because the English government wants the EPL to take a stand for British sovereignty.

It is a very interesting case.

We don't need a hypothetical. The Clippers JUST got busted for this.

A similar penalty for Man City should be the suggestion. While they can't mimic the draft picks there can be transfer limitations to go with the huge fine and monitoring.

True you have a good point but The Clippers didnt win jack

I seriously doubt the EPL take major points from MC and the remedy will be severe roster management limitations like transfer bans

we’ll see, I think the EPL has failed this no matter what they do because the legitimacy of entire seasons are now tainted forever

That shouldn't matter. The punishment should be based on the crime. Bad luck/management in the interim shouldn't have an impact

I did just think of something else. 3 seasons of point deductions in descending amounts. You could push them towards relegation in year 1 and if that happened they would be in pain in year 2. But would still likely remove them at the last from title contention for 3 years and likely UCL for 2-3.

I think it's important to note that the EPL isn't deciding punishments in this case. They investigated and charged City. A 3 person independent commission tried the case and will issue whatever punishment based on PL rules.

it does when you consider the veracity of the league itself and the hardware associated with it in a ten year time frame

are the results legitimate? was the league itself legitimate? did we see a team just cheat its way to dominance and stay there?

in the grand scheme of things it doesnt really matter but those seasons and records are tainted forever
