If we sell Downing, that makes it pretty much a definite that we have made a profit in the transfer window thus far and have not spent more than, what, 9m pounds on anyone?
How do we expect to finish top four if that is the case? I know we have tried to sign some guys and failed, but surely there are more quality players that would be willing to sign with Liverpool that don't require Champions League immediately? Two top targets were happy enough to sign with Spurs - though of course, Spurs was a lot closer to CL than we were last year.

Why would we move Downing if we don't have someone lined up to replace? We are looking thin again. Hopefully there is a signing in the bag

Yeah you don't have to remind me.
And I understand that we can get downing off the books and bring in someone else that is essentially equal for a lot cheaper, it's not like downing is important overall to us moving forward but dang I'm not a fan of this letting them go before replacing them. It is essentially the reason we had such a poor start last year.
