My family plays every Sunday for a couple of hours. We started in March and have developed some semblance of skill. Dribbling is very hard, but if you have a background in basketball you should understand the gist of what you want to do when you're running at a defender.

Like others have said, the higher your work rate the better you'll appear. My brother and I are the best in our family not because we're more skilled, but because the rest of my family is either significantly more out of shape than us or just lazy. Also try to keep your head up and work on passing the ball.

Definitely stretch. I've been nursing a hamstring for months now, it fricking blows to kick the ball sometimes lol.

Agree with many of the things said here. My Over 30 team took on a new player a couple years back, and he did fine. He was already in really good shape, which helped. We also took in a guy (this was a while ago) that had only watched soccer and played pickup. He actually grew into a really good player.

In rec soccer, almost every team plays 4-4-2. You'll probably get put at outside back until you prove yourself somewhere else. Stay between your man and the goal, don't lunge in on tackles, try to shepherd the attacker to the side and end lines, and follow your guy when he makes a pass. When you make a tackle or intercept a pass, pick your head up and look to make the easy outlet to your wide midfielder. If you can do those things (and run) you'll be fine.

Watch some outside backs on TV (that aren't the Dani Alves/Marcelo types sprinting up field at every opportunity) and you'll see what I mean.

Baton Rouge Soccer Club
I would think there's others too but I don't live in that area. Capital City United maybe?

I didn't really start playing until I was 25. Ball control takes years and no I don't have that much.

For you I recommend joining a league or seeing where pick up happens. And always ask guys for feedback. "What do you do when you play defense?" Helped me.

Don't get frustrated when some guy half your size glides by you at Mach 2. Just keep working on it. Best of luck.

It's a good idea.

I taught a guy your age how to skateboard recently. He paid me in alcohol.

Ball control is obviously a big deal, but at your size, people will move out of the way if you run straight at pace. That would be a simple thing that you could learn, and is more nuanced than just toe poking it forward wrecklessly.
If you end up on a team with players that know how to play, LISTEN. One of my biggest pet peeves when I play on teams with inexperienced players. If you're playing indoor with air Jordan's, maybe listen to your teammates.

Man, do NOT join an indoor league. You will feel much more awkward playing in an indoor league than you will outdoor. Much smaller ball, much different game. You're in it for the exercise anyway. I would look for an outdoor league way before indoor. I played soccer from about the time I was 4 - 14. Tried picking it up at about 25-26 in an indoor match and felt like crap afterwards. Lol. Outdoor is the way to go man, you can do it!
