Can't wait to hear Rog Bennet talk about this one. Makes me wish I had sat radio to catch MIB Monday.
England were awful today.

Very, very entertaining game.
For the first 60 or so yes. It really turned into a shite show at the end and in ET. England looked like "expensive Greece" out there. Poor showing. Glad the Italians got the result. Very deserved.

Dont know why the reaction is so surprising
People who expected England to play expansive football were kidding themselves.
Doing the 'Chelsea' or 'Greece 2004' was always going to be the plan and it just didnt come of. You do have to feel sorry for people like Gerrard and Terry who it is almost undoubtedly their last real tournement and they never reached a semi final....I do think if Shearer didnt retire in '00 we could have won the 2002 WC but thats another story.
As for the penalties, I am surprised Hart didnt save any, Pirlos and Dimantis penalties are case in point as to why keepers shouldnt guess.
Having said that Pirlos and Balotellis penalties are outstanding.

Gerrard and Terry wont play in the WC?
I know Wilsher is supposed to come in and be a key figure for Englands central midfield, and England always has plenty of solid center halfs. Just trying to think why they wouldn't be part of the squad, sure they are old but if they can still cut it then so be it.

Mainly due to age
Terry is 31, 32 later this year, Gerrard is 32 and was cramping inside 90 minutes.
2 more years more speed will be lost, atleast 100 more games in the legs and playing the same schedule in Brazils heat will no doubt be too much for them imo. They might make the squad for experience but neither should be starting.

found a genius quote from mario in the guardian from the day before the match. probably deserves its own thread, but oh well.
Balotelli was asked about James Milners observation that he has two sides. One that can score spectacular goals and win matches, and one that does not train when it is cold and has a questionable attitude. "Hes lucky" the striker said. "He knows two Balotellis."
