Yes but they are effective in different ways. Donovan is more the facilitator while Dempsey is more the finisher.

We'd never play it that way. Playing a 4-3-2-1 is basically impossible without world class full-backs. The only team I can remember pull it off successfully was the Milan teams of the mid-noughties, and there were some supremely extenuating circumstances that allowed them to play that way, i.e. once in a life time players.

Are you suggesting Eddie Johnson or Fabian Johnson ? Neither would work in central midfield, especially since we need Fabian on the flanks.
A 4-2-3-1 provides plenty of opportunity for Donovan and Dempsey to combine with one another while also giving us attacking width, as well as appropriate defensive protection.

with Jones subbing in for Stu or Zusi (moving Stu out of holding role) if we need to hold a lead and then subbing GAM or Wondo in if we need a goal. And also hopefully Mix can be in the mix too as another holding mid option.

If they are occupying the same space, does it matter?
Fair enough on the 4-3-2-1 needing excellent fullbacks and strong central mids.
I agree on the 4-2-3-1 being the best fit for the talent on hand. Just curious about how to get the most out of Dempsey and Donovan of they both want to be up the field and in the middle.

I disagree, but I think he'll only be brought as an emergency sub to chase goals late in games.
In fact, if the four players mentioned in the OP are on the field at the same time, I'd guess that we're down a goal, and in desperate need of one.

Agreed.
As for LD and Deuce on the field at the same time, I will initially have the fear of them trying to occupy the same space until I see otherwise. LD can play the wings more effectively than Deuce so I would be more inclined to put him at the LM of the 4-2-3-1. When he drifts inside, Fabian can provide width

Probably a 4-2-3-1. It gets our best players on the field at the same time, provides attacking width, and gives us good defensive shape.

im not saying he sucks but we have lots of guys ahead of him in the pool, he will be battling for one of the last sports on the WC roster esp being already 30 and only 12 caps the gold cup might be his ceiling

Do we really? Jozy is obviously number one, and there really isn't a clear number two yet. Lots of promise, but no one has stepped up yet. Striker might be our weakest position behind LB, where we have a real dearth of international quality.
