Seems like that will screw up the knockout stages.

It's going to be lame and some 3rd place teams will advance.

It's like it used to be for the world cup. That's how it was when we hosted.

Here's how it works in Football Manager:

The top two in the group stages will advance as usual. Of the six remaining teams in 3rd place, the four with the highest point total will advance to the knockout stages. To me, this ensures that future Groups of Death will have no meaning.

Yeah, it will be a terrible format for the Euros though because it will make the event longer when it doesn't need to be. And there aren't 24 teams that deserve to be in the tournament.

Is anyone going to enjoy Germany beating Estonia 5-0?

Let's not get ridiculous here. While I do think 24 teams is a mistake, don't act like we are adding Haiti to the mix.

Here is a list of teams not in Euro 2012 which would likely qualify for Euro 2016:

Switzerland
Serbia
Bosnia and Herzegovina
Norway
Turkey
Belgium
Montenegro
Slovakia

After those 8 are:
Romania
Slovenia
Hungary
Scotland
Northern Ireland
Israel
Finland

I'd say a 24 team Euros will end up being pretty exciting. There are 10-12 teams on that list that could surprise and be in any Euro or World Cup in the future.

While I would much prefer it stay at 16, there are still teams like Switzerland, Serbia, Bosnia & Herzo, Belgium, and Turkey who have some good players worth watching who missed out this 2012 tournament. And maybe Scotland can qualify.

Let's look at the qualifying groups for Euro 2012.

All of the second place teams would have gotten automatic berths along with four of the third place finishers

Here are the teams that would have qualified:

Turkey, Ireland, Estonia, Bosnia, Sweden, Croatia, Montenegro, Portugal, and the Czech Republic.

The 3rd place teams that would have gotten into the playoffs:

Belgium, Armenia, Serbia, Romania, Hungary, Israel, Switzerland, Norway, and Scotland. Scotland and the Swiss would have to battle it for the final spot in the playoffs.

This way, any halfway decent team gets in.

To me the fact that 3rd place teams will advance to the knockout rounds is much worse than having teams in that may not be as quality. As has been pointed out there are some pretty decent sides not in this tournament. However, no way a team that finishes 3rd out of a group of 4 deserve to keep playing.
