What did they do to Americanize it? Why didn't the fans like it?

They had a countdown clock like in the NCAA and the old NASL and every game that was tied at the end of regulation had a shootout. What this did was alienate traditional soccer fans without attracting new fans.

What are some suggestions for Americanization? I mean, it's mostly American players playing versions of a nascent American style, without the diving and rolling around of other leagues.

This last week, the average attendance at MLS matches was above 19,000. I think the MLS is doing a great job of increasing interest, as the league has seen a 40% increase in attendance since 2003. Next year there is a great chance that the league can average 20,000 people for the duration of the season, with Montreal entering the league, and with Houston's new stadium finally opening. I don't think there is any particular need to Americanize the sport, other than to promote American stars.

They definitely need to do more of this.

Again, I don't really know what I'm talking about but I would like to see the sport grow. I'm not ripping what the MLS is doing, I just didn't know what they were doing. Hopefully, I'll start watching some soccer like I promised myself I would after the WC last year.

ETA: I just don't know where to start when it comes to watching soccer.

I had always liked the sport but never really watched it closely. A few days before the 2009 MLS season started, I decided I'd try to watch it a little more often. MLS had a new expansion team, so I decided I would pull for them. I think it helps to have a favorite team if you want to follow a league.

This year the MLS has been extremely entertaining. It's a good year to start watching.

My first suggestion would be to watch as much soccer as you can. If you can get Fox Soccer in your area do that, as they will have a lot of European games, as well as MLS games, along with good programs about soccer history. A site like Zonal Marking is great for attempting to understand the game at the tactical level. There are other sites like it, but ZM is a good start. ESPN has games on ESPN3 and ESPN2 weekly, so keep an eye out for those. Their HD presentation is amazing. When the European season starts in August, start watching those games to see what the sport at a high level is like.

Countdown clock in each half was the main change. Another was a dribble-up shootout to resolve ties in the regular season.

MLS realized they were alienating true soccer fans in so doing, and also failing to attract new fans, so they reverted to FIFA rules.

Yeah, any attempt to "Americanize" the game will lose more fans than it would attract.

If you have Saturdays off, there's nothing better than getting up and watching 9 a.m. EPL matches and then college football starts at 11. Even the mornings with a good 6:45 match are fun as well.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. How's Houston doing this year? I suppose following them would be the most logical first step.

I can't agree with this enough. Though around 7 I need some coffee to keep going.

Competing for a playoff spot. Next year they are getting a new stadium which will probably be really nice.

I could have made so many quality posts, but the true founding soccer fagz have done it for me.

Carry on, brothers.

I have heard about this, it should be pretty cool.

Well, for now I guess I'll give the MLS a shot and watch Houston. I definitely need something else to watch besides just the Astros losing.

I may just start hanging around this board a little more, hopefully you guys won't pick on me.

ETA: Oh, and I do have FSC. So I'll be checking that out.

I'll never forget the charge down the keeper one-on-one shootouts and how I thought it was just about the stupidest thing I'd ever seen.

Though I do sorta miss the era of tie-dye kits.

Are you Mexican? If not don't worry. This is the best board on the entire site. Watch some EPL matches snd choose a club. It will make your your enjoyment much easier.

Recommendation:

For now, watch games that feature past, present and future US national teamers.

The names will be familiar, and you'll have a rooting interest in THOSE guys' success.

Don't be afraid to ask who the national teamers are.

You'll figure out what team to like from there.

Nope, just happen to live in North Mexico.

Will do, although I need to know what teams I should keep away from so I don't look like a huge bandwagoner.

Don't worry about that. Whatever team catches your eye in terms of playing style and history is fine. Once you choose we can frick with you.

I suppose people will tell you to stay away from the big four (or six) in England, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Tottenham, since the EPL is the most popular league here. My advice is to watch every game and root for the team that appeals to your taste. We are all bandwagoners in the beginning.
