re: How bad will I be destroyed if I show up at a pick up game?

quote:All of this. The great thing about Crescent City is there are leagues for any type of skill level, men’s and Coed, over 30 etc. Islano, which used to be one main centralized league, has broken up into a few different leagues around the city. It’s mostly Honduran and other international players but it usually has some great competition. 15 years ago professional Honduran teams would come to the US to play an Islano all star team at Gormley or Pan Am and it would be a full house.
I’ve played in the SELASA league at Laferniere Park, the Crescent City league Uptown, and the Playmakers Indoor league.
The top SELASA was really fun. Some good competition at the top and some fun high scoring games when we played the teams at the bottom of the league.
The Crescent City league was fun, but there were a lot more ex-football players, so there was lots of reckless tackling. I injured my knee pretty badly on an awful tackle (which pretty much ended me playing in any organized league).
The indoor league was really fun too, but it’s been years since I played out there.

Request to play the #10 position
Demand the ball at your feet every time your team is in possession
Only try long range finesse shots

First you must show up in a full kit, secondly play very aggressive, not a bad idea to slide tackle the first person that challenges you. You have to establish yourself as a physical player. If things go poorly fake an injury and run away. Never tell anyone your real name

I did the play nola league for Season, but it's not worth it. There's a group that plays on Thursdays right outside the zoo, but I don't know if that's more organized pickup or walk up and play. If they're out there today, I can walk over and see
I know some people that have done PlayNOLA and they all say it’s no good.
I’ve also tried pickup at Tulane and in front of NOMA, didn’t care for either. Too many guys that take pickup too serious for my taste. Getting fussed at for a bad touch playing pickup isn’t my idea of fun.

I’m in two leagues with CCS, overall I like it because it’s close to me and is the most organized. Having a ref is nice, but quality is so hit or miss. Coed league is chill, competitive league I’m in I’ve been shoved into the fence on purpose two times now. I’m still playing, but there are certainly some bad apples in the league. I also hate how teams are managed, they need make everyone register each season and pay up front. Making the managers responsible for paying and collecting the team fee is frustrating.

Islano
Ha, I’d never recommend anyone play in that league, especially someone who is asking if they’d get destroyed in a pick up game.
There were a handful of guys on my SELASA team that still played Islano and they complained about it every weekend. At that time, there were still some pro Hondurans that would play in some of the games.

Play defense, keep it simple,
Play an outside back position and use your conditioning to stay between their runners and the goal.
Don’t even try to steal the ball because it will likely be somewhere else and you will end up taking someone down.

Finally did it.
Had a blast. Yeah, I sucked technically, but I was one of the fittest. Half of these dudes were fat and still hungover from last night. Still, they were surprisingly agile for their weight. We played full field. You could tell most played soccer on the college or high school level. I stayed back on defense for the most part and had some good clearances. Only dude who criticized me was a black guy with a heavy African accent. I let a girl get past me twice in a row and it pissed him off.
He was fat though. Everyone else was nice. Nearly netted a goal off a corner! Got my left knee on it and put it about a foot to the left of the post. Great workout. Played skins and now my shoulders are crisped.
One very recent USL player showed up, compete with his team shirt.
He screwed around with everybody and stayed back on defense. I passed the ball to him on probably half my touches. I don't think he passed midfield even once. Looking at his wikipedia page he had a short MLS stint.
