I've only been following soccer for 5 years now so my judgement of older players come from sports articles, message boards and YouTube videos. Ronaldo had an amazing skill set, but in my noobish analysis I don't see him as a better player than CR7.

I could actually see that being an argument. CR7 makes people look like they're running in slow motion by being pretty fast, with his ridiculous movement, and with his conviction. It's a combination of everything, and you could argue that the reason he's never really had super serious injuries is because he takes recovery seriously.

I rarely agree with Randy, but outside of dribbling and the ability to beat defenders one on one I think CR7 is better. In every other category. And I watched fat Ronaldo a lot back in the day.

I think that R9 was pretty fast. Comparing him at his prime to CR7 in a straight-line sprint would be mildly interesting
Ultimately, historical arguments are seriously difficult, even 10-15 years on. I don't think that CR7 gets enough credit historically, but it's whatever. What Randy has said is certainly not incredibly off-base, or anything

That's a good point. The vast differences in the two versions of the game can skew certain aspects of a player's ability. Or emphasize certain abilities that are currently important but historically less significant.

Yeah, one of the Spanish language stations was replaying classic WC matches over the holidays. I'll just say that we should thank players like Beckenbauer and Cruyff for the groundwork they put down.

When OG Ronaldo hit the scene, he arrived with a skill set that was somewhat unique and unprecedented. He combined pace, power, balance, and craft (especially step-overs with body feints and shifts) in a way that no one else had. Defenders looked silly one-on-one. And he defined Brazilian flair at a time when the Brazilians were dominating the sport. So he was the face of Brazilian success for probably 6+ years.
In my opinion, CR7 is the better all-around player and has been able to enjoy sustained success over a longer period of years at a top level. Even though CR7 is gifted with plenty of flair, I don't know that you could say he does things never seen before (aside from possibly his style of free kick). So, in that respect, CR7 probably lacks some of the cache of OGR.

I don't know if CR7 brings anything "new" but who has been so efficient and lethal in virtually every aspect of an attacking skill set?

It's difficult to compare because Ronaldo's injuries really didn't help him even though he still had a great career. Another thing that Cristiano Ronaldo has been amazing with, his overall fitness but it's hard to disagree with

I preferred the style of Real Ronaldo, really ashame about his injuries... But would agree that CR probably has the better overall skill set...
But I also think their difference in pace is probably negligible... And I would say defenders feared the real Ronaldo running at them with the ball, as much or more than the other one..
Edit: and I think he's referred as the real Ronaldo for two reasons, he came first and was/is a much more likable fella
