Spain wins group with 5 points and Germany is runner-up over Japan on goal differential.

Missed the sarcasm since the announcers were also acting like Spain was out at the end when Germany had a 3 goal lead.

And the only team to not have a loss is England. Although they should have lost.

Yeah some of the European sides are either too old or too young. Japan is well-organized and is good technically.

Their tough test is a really deep Brazil team in the quarters.

Umm yes they are.

See: USA. Put them up against a fiery or technically sound midfield and that whole operation runs into problems. Big ones.

De Bruyne was right.. Belgium too old. Not like we or anyone else didn’t already know this but he didn’t need to say it. Wonder what kind of rift that caused…

Doesn't Spain play Portugal next? Hardly a cakewalk.

In Quarters. Would have Brazil in Quarters if they won today.

so for reference... the USA has both missed a World Cup and advanced out of group stage since the last time Germany advanced out of the group stage in a World Cup

also... let's check in on our CONCACAF brothers, shall we?

USA - advanced to Round of 16
Mexico - eliminated in group stage
Canada - eliminated in group stage
Costa Rica - eliminated in group stage

Germany was and could still be a powerhouse but seem to have a bit of an identity crisis. They seem to be having trouble letting go of an older generation of world class players while working in a solid group of (eventually world class) younger players.

Hendo can probably comment on it better than me, but they seem to be caught between generations IMO. Not totally dissimilar to USA circa 2018. I think the middle generation was not quite as good as the older generation and the younger guys are still coming along right now.

I also admit I don’t follow Germany that much so I may be completely off base.
