If you don't have an amazing player on the level of Javi Martinez, or an amazing passer, three man systems against one striker always struggle because its 3 v 1 at the back and one less in midfield or attack. The system is built to free Messi and Aguero to attack all game, but a 4-4-1-1 will do essentially the same thing. Maybe Sabella thought Bosnia would play two strikers.
