Why does Italy go ahead of Croatia if results held right now? They would all be on 5 points but Croatia and Spain would have a better GD. What am I missing?

Eta: World Cup and Euros have a different tie-breaking order. My favorite part is that if Croatia and Spain draw 2-2 then Italy is out no matter what. Italy could win 10-0 over Ireland and it wouldn't matter.

Thanks, dumb that they eliminate the Ireland game imo.

I don't agree with it either.

It's not that dumb
Also notice that Russia would have advance the other day if this were the WC.
Yup, Talked about it the other day after their second matches.

You can really see the reasoning behind both and it's not that either UEFA or FIFA discount the other tiebreaker; they simply reverse the order of application.
Tough to really argue that Russia deserves to win a tiebreaker against Greece when Greece beat them.
Croatia or Italy wouldn't have had much argument either had Croatia managed a draw against Spain like Italy did. Since they drew with each other, the next tiebreaker either has to be a choice between more goals against Spain vs who can hammer Ireland worse. Either choice would be pretty arbitrary as far as determining the actual best team.

I mean for FIFA/UEFA it's not that bad but it seems silly to basically eliminate 1/3 of a team's matches when deciding who goes on.
As for the Russia thing, I actually like that much better. If it's down to two teams head to head should definitely go before GD.

You contradict yourself, if you think h2h goes before GD then why do you have a problem with it? It essentially is a h2h involving three teams...

Because if all the teams draw with each other, which is what would have happened had Croatia held on, then you obviously can't use head to head in that situation so you should take all games into consideration.

Indeed, if GD is the same don't they just flip a coin?

Well you still use h2h in that situation, but the GD involving the 3 matches those three teams played if that's still tied then bring on the team that beat Ireland worse.

Yes unless the two teams tied played their third game against each other in which case they have a penalty shootout.

The GD is always going to be tied if the three teams in question all played to a draw.
Basically, imo, if it's two teams and one team beat the other then that team should go through. If it's three teams who either all drew or all beat each other than you should use GD.

I agree. That said, I think they should use goal differential for 3 teams.

Exactly. I don't mind using goals scored as a tiebreaker, but total goal differential should be used first.
