Impressive win by Chile or just a display of ineptitude by Spain?

Both.

Del Bosque fricked up by trying to force Costa into the squad. Didn't help that Xabi had an absolute shocker in the first half.

Going to be interesting to see Spain's next move before the Euro qualifiers. Have to think the next squad will be filled with Athletic and Atletico players.

They should just go ahead and move to the next generation. Build the team around Costa, Isco, Koke, Munian while keeping some young vets like Fabregas, Busquets, and Martinez.

They are still extremely talented and deep, but the fact that teams have figured out how to play against tiki-taka means the Spanish will have to adapt.

True. I think we find out how legit Chile is in their next match. Spain looked piss poor this WC right from the get go. Wouldn't be surprised to see them lose to Australia too.

Where is Spain "ranked" vs. Chile?

In that sense, it'd be an upset since they took down #1. If you've watched some soccer in the past few months though, you could see the writing on the wall.

It's Germany's turn!

Chile's "rank" according to FIFA is 14 though they have played with and beat some of the best teams in the world. They are a very good team.

If they have been playing terrible for months, how did they maintain the #1 ranking?

I'm going to tell you one thing you have to understand:

FIFA rankings are absolutely shite and are laughed at by everybody. Annoyingly, they still play a part in seeding, but, really, just don't look at them at all.

They weren't playing terrible, but there were little things that were bound to break. It's like Ohio State being #1, but you know they're not #1. Then they lose right in November before they get the bid for the BCS Title Game.

They should have lost their #1 ranking when Brazil crushed them in the Confed Cup last year IMO
