For me personally, the most underrated player of the last 20 years is...

David Beckham.
At one point, I remember the conversation, in America especially, being centered around how he was more of a celebrity than a footballer. A famous player that was valued more for his looks than his technical ability. That couldn't be farther from the truth. He was an elite player, an all-time great, really. One of the best pure passers in the game, especially when it came to long balls, horizontally and vertically. He excelled at defending, attacking, and leading men. Big, strong, deceptively fast, an all-around player who was capable of lining up anywhere in the midfield.
He was awesome at Man U, he was awesome at Real Madrid, he was awesome at AC Milan, and he was awesome in LA.
Just an absolute special player that doesn't get the credit he deserves, and he deserves some of the blame, no doubt.

I didn't start watching football much until 2008 or 2009, so I missed Beckham at his best, and he's one of those players I've never gone back and watched video of. I think I'll have to dedicate some time to that.

Beckham is a classic case of a player who was so popular that he became overrated and paradoxically underrated. I still think Giggs was a better player overall, but Beckham was a fantastic crosser of the ball and had a spectacular freekick. Most wide players do not play like him. He was the prototypical wide midfielder in my view. His cross-field switches were always so accurate.

he did his job better than most ever- distribute the ball to the forwards, and take brilliant free kicks.

He also took a lot of heat for shite he pulled with LA Galaxy, leaving for AC Milan, getting hurt. There was also some article years ago about how he was perceived in the locker room, and how he treated his peers. I'll see if I can dig up a link.
But I think those are the reasons for a lot the hate. For me I couldn't stand the man simply because he played for Manchester United, and Real Madrid. Two clubs I love to hate. That, and no man has a right to be that good with the ball, and have a face that beautiful.

I didn't really start following soccer until about 5 years ago, so I had no idea what you were referencing. After watching it on youtube, I got to ask, were people really mad at Beckham for that? That was such a weak red card. I guess the argument could be made that there is no room for deadball tripping, but it was just so minor.

I think everyone rates Ryan Giggs appropriately. Honestly, I've never really heard anyone say he's anything other than awesome.
Beckham caught a lot of flack, and I don't think a lot of people really appreciate how good of a player he really was.

The only real critism I hear about Giggs is from his personal life. If Wales had better players playing with him, and able to realy compete, then he would probably be rated higher. I think Beckham just got too famous. He's a really good player, and a normal athlete with his abilities probably wouldn't be scrutinized as much.

Not to be that guy, but Beckham got to #2 and #1 outfield player in a pretty shitty way, making sub appearences in friendlies etc. he only started 3 of his last 14 games and only played 90mins once in his last 18. He racked up around 20 caps more than he should have because of who he was.
Gerrard at one less than him is more impressive imo.
I think Nesta is chronically underrated, everyone talks about Cannavaro because he was Italy captain, but Nesta was always better in my eyes.

Gabriel Batistuta. Dude was a great striker and rarely does he get mentioned among the great players of the last many years.
