Flag etiquette

I know we are all patriotic as hell at the moment, but I feel this needs to be addressed. There is nothing wrong with wearing flag "patterned" shirts, shorts, or bandannas. Don't be the tool to have an actual American flag and wear it as a cape.

Yeah. Doesn't bother me either. USMNT games and the Olympics are the only times I actually care about the flag.

The problem is that I believe in freedom of speech and expression more than a piece of cloth. It does bother me when people use the flag in a degrading way for attention, but that's their right as an American. A right that I chose to defend when signing the contract.

So do I. I believe people should be able to do lots of things they shouldn't do.
I don't claim any special patriotism, and when I had a flag in front of my house, I neglected to take it down every night, every time it rained, etc. But I don't dismiss the entire notion that we should treat the flag with some respect.
Though it does seem that a substantial portion of US soccer fans are more ironically patriotic than actually patriotic, I don't think anyone was wearing the flag to disrespect it. But if someone who really does care about respect for the flag tells you it is disrespectful based on long-standing traditions regarding flag etiquette, I don't think it makes a lot of sense to blithely dismiss his concerns.

He makes no argument about disrespecting the flag. He simply calls it douchey...
Personally the flag is a symbol of freedom thus if I feel like wearing it, if that's what you want to do, the act is giving truth to what the flag stands for and in no way should be considered disrespectful.

It seems the ones that try to be the most patriotic are always the first to prevent other from expressing their freedoms.
It's. A. Flag.
And as a personal aside, I think it's awesome when I see someone wearing it as a cape.

I'm the same way. Just because I believe that people have the right to express themselves using the American flag as a symbol for America doesn't mean that I would personally do it.

I don't get into morality fights because I lost along time ago. I go by the law, and the law says, "Meh.. you're not supposed to, but we're not going to stop you."

Freedom allows for people to wear a flag as a cape if they want, and also to choose not to. What is douchey is telling other people how they should spend their freedom.
