I knew a faction of Croats were going to be racist if Balotelli played for the sheer reason that the Croatian racists are racist.
It doesn't matter whether Balotelli congratulated them on their deeply heartfelt beliefs instead of saying he'd like to kill them, they'd be racists.
It's hard to see deflecting even the most minute portion of the blame toward Balotelli's comments.
In fact, there's been racist chants towards him for two straight matches and it seems he hasn't done anything aside from playing soccer.
The only thing Balotelli could really do to not have that faction of Croat/Spanish racist fans react towards him is not be black.
That's probably where the anger behind his comments derives.

I said "factions" of Spanish fans, which is the case.
According to what I've read in the newspapers, UEFA's investigation into the group of Spanish fans chanting "monkey noises" at Balotelli is based just as much on witnesses/testimony from other Spanish fans who were outraged at the behavior of the racist group.
In my post, I tried not to generalize "all" Croatians either.
However, we all know that pretty much every country has these right wing, racist factions. In fact, I find it a pretty positive thing that other Spanish fans are speaking out about it. I'd hope that Italian fans would/will do the same in the future. The best way to curtail this behavior at matches is probably that it's policed from other fans becoming intolerant and not simply from the outside.

Goes to show that racism can happen anywhere. Even countries who only have like 20-30 black people in the WHOLE country.

Anyone who has ever been to Croatia and met people who lived through WWII knows how much the Croats despise the Italians. My relatives who lived through the occupation tell me horror stories about their Italian occupiers and how much better they were treated by the Germans after the Italians surrendered. Balotelli was abused by Croatian fans as much for being Italian as for being black.

bullshite!!
Throw bananas and monkey chant Balotelli and only Balotelli specifically because they hate Italians but make no other noteworthy protest?
Boy, that really shows Italy!
Croatia has a faction of idiot racist fans that were acting like racist fools because they are racist fools.
Wh does everyone keep trying to excuse or explain them?

Love how you positively assert your asinine opinions with experiential cause and conviction.

So you agree that they singled out Balotelli to throw bananas at and chant racist slogans at largely to protest Italy?
Wouldn't these racists Croatian fools perhaps know that the right wing Italian assholes to blame for any problem they have with Italy could care less?? You know, since they're racists too!
Seriously.
There sure are a lot of excuses on here for their activity. I suppose everyone gets all defensive when someone from their country/region is accused of racism but that's part of the problem.
Glad so many Spanish fans stood up to the group of racists they had chanting Balotelli instead of simply blaming it on WWII.

Spain is no more xenophobic than the US, and up until recently, much less so.

on what you do base your assertion that the statement is absurd?
I speak from extensive, real in person experience, not some hack job press I randomly pull from the internet.

Lingering hostilities from WWII seemed to be the excuse above for the Croatian fans racist chants toward Balotelli. I suppose their racists think they were only occupied by black Italians.
By that same logic, the Spanish fans, who in my opinion did the right thing by reporting the smaller group of fans chanting at Balotelli, would have just excused them on some past history between the countries and not confronted it as racism.
