Im not so much as of worried as who is in the top 16 as opposed to how the top 16 is ranked.

Well I think that a lot of people who watch Olympic events realize that the 14th best team can beat the 3rd best team 3-4 out of 10 times, so just having the top 16 in some order is about as close as you can get. It isn't necessarily like CFB where the #1 team beats the #16 team 9 out of 10 times

Of the 8 teams you listed, 6 are going to the top 16 of this tournament.

like i said. i really don't have a problem with who is in the top 16. Just how they are ranked there.

England and Spain are really the 2 I think you can be mad about, but then you have to be mad that CR is in the 40s

yea those all suck.

But Portugal at 4 and the Dutch at 15?
Greece above the dutch and French?
I mean sure Greece can get results in qualifying but would you have put money on Greece over the French or the Dutch to win the cup?

Honestly, that looks like FIFA rankings did a pretty damn good job. Thats the majority of the top 16 teams in the final 16.

Im not watching Olympics.. this is World Cup soccer. I understand upsets happen but thats not my problem. like, I don't really have a problem with Spain being #1 prior to the cup even though we all knew they weren't as good as the last world cup or euros.

I'm not having a problem with teams underperforming at the Cup.

I have a problem with everyone knowing prior to the cup the X is better than X no matter how you look at it.

I have not looked at FIFA rankings since prbly after the euros or maybe before that because i know they are shite. I'm Just saying that even prior to the cup, every knew or should have known these rankings were not of who is the best team in the world from 1-60.

Not a terrible job by the FIFA rankings. The Swiss ranking has always been the one that really stuck out for me. Also think the Greeks are too high, but whatever.

Costa Rica and Nigeria are the only two minnows left according to FIFA. I'd say the eye test would only add the Greeks, with the US, Swiss, Russians, and Mexicans as solid but unspectacular sides.

My only gripe is that everyone knows that this is not how these teams should be ranked.

Agreed. And when your number 17 curbstomps the number 6 (seeded) team in their group, you know the rankings could be improved.

Thanks. That was driving me nuts. Looks like the rankings are pretty good, but I always thought Spain was too high and The Netherlands too low.

Other than those two, pretty spot on.

Right i understand they use past performance and its a math based formula and that's fine. a really unbiased way to do it (and that is ultimately a lot more important than my gripe)
but im sure these rankings were a lot different than Vegas's odds.

Spain deserved the #1 IMO. I still don't think they are that far off the world's best teams.

But Vegas factors in the groups. I'd bet the US was much lower than its FIFA ranking. Same with Chile.

I do and personally i would not have ranked them #1 even prior to the cup. BUT i have no problem with them being ranked #1 prior to the cup. No problem if they are still highly ranked after the cup.

FIFA rankings are largely based on results in competitive fixtures, and those competitive games are ranked based on importance and the strength of your opposition.

The Netherlands got throttled in the group stage of Euro 2012, so they lost several ranking points. They destroyed their relatively mediocre qualifying group, and gained little from the rankings. Brazil naturally dropped in the rankings until winning the Confed Cup, because they didn't have to play qualifying games.

ELO rankings are generally more accurate.

If you want rankings, look at Vegas.

Those are always the best regardless of sport.

This.

That being said, the FIFA rankings are pretty solid. Obv. the are some huge splits, but not bad, really. They used to be much worse (when the USA was Top 3-5).

The Ghana ranking was also pretty absurdly low. They only got one point but even with all their African infighting and money squabbling they still took the #3, #4, and #13 teams to the wire in every game
