will a great matchday atmosphere blow my American mind? College football games are intense and extremely loud and Atl United seem ridiculous, but I know American fans aren’t as engaged as Europeans with the chants etc..

Have been to two matches overseas: Lyon vs St Etienne (derby) and United v Crystal Palace.

The Rhône Derby is the second fiercest rivalry in France. The two clubs only 30 miles apart and pits white collt v blue collar. These two clubs despise each other. I sat in the Bad Gones supporters section behind the goal..At one point in the second half something that sounded like an m80 went off in deck above us. Later a bunch of Lyon fans jumped onto the side of the pitch and started smashing the barricades/advertising signs along the end line. They dispatched a battalion with riot gear to restore order. Game ended in a 1-1 draw

Saw United tear apart Palace 4-0 last year at Old Trafford. Had an excellent time pre gaming at the Bishop Blaize and sat in the Stretford End. Atmosphere was decent enough for a match against a bottom dweller...You can feel the history in a place like that place.

To answer your question, the atmosphere game rates to the type of opponent you’re playing, like if LSU were playing Bama than say Arkansas

In France I saw a lot of Marseille games. There was a fun, boisterous atmosphere on the way to the stadium. People are drinking and smoking around the stadium and there are food stalls set up. It’s not really tailgating in the American sense. Sometimes supporters groups will march to the stadium. I had a fun time just being with other fans and singing songs on the metro on the way to the game. Keep your tickets close though because I had a friend get his ticket snatched out of his hand by a hood rat outside the stadium.

It depends on stadium/teams obviously.

Took the family to AC Milan v. Juventus at the San Siro in 2014. First small explosive to go off after the road flares and my wife wanted to leave. We sat in the 3rd tier first row in the curva sud right behind the ultras. It was cool having to move with the crowd around the riot police protecting the Juventus exit after the game. My wife swore she would never attend another soccer game in Europe.

On the other hand, my son and I had so much fun at a Fulham game at Craven Cottage that we convinced my wife and daughter to join us the next year. Very, very family friendly stadium (aside by the one fan screaming frick you, etc. every couple of minutes).

England is kind of hamstrung bc in the top two leagues there is no standing sections and no drinking beer while you can see the pitch.

But I've been to two Manchester derbies and a NW derby and it blows away any college or nfl game ive been too.

Most EPL games will be fun, a Palace home match is unreal. But the real fun in England is in the lower leagues. Standing sections and small grounds right on top of the players. Lower league football is awesome and very affordable.

On the continent is a whole different ball game though, and that's bc of Ultra culture. Standing sections in the stadium and you can have beer in your seat.

When i went to the FCK vs Hoffenheim for a place in the Bundesliga. It was by far the loudest sporting event ive been to in my life.

I went to a Fulham game and loved it. Awesome stadium and awesome atmosphere. The brits next to me were impressed because I knew more about the players than they did

That stadium is different bc of the whole neutrals section, that just ends up being an away section.

That happens to me as well, mate. I have shed 95% of my British accent so most everyone in the UK fancies me a Yank
