Italy is basically playing 5 at the back.
They've got a speedy counterattack too which has stretched Spain.
Italy is just absorbing pressure and hoping to counter well

Italy's 3 back has fared much better than I anticipated... Of course it's more like a 7 back when the mids get back.

Italy is a 5-4-1 on defense and 3-6-1 on the attack.

And it's working. I feel like if they had Balotelli at the end, atleast one of those chances would have been finished.

I really wish Mario was playing.

Italy has to have at least double shots on goal

Gilardino has been excellent in his build up play. Simple game that looks to use Pirlo and De Rossi to spray passes forward to midfield runners.

If Italy had swagotelli I think they'd have 1 also.
Italy defending 1st and playing the counter? Sounds like classic Italy, to me it's fun to watch, they're thundering on the break.

Yeah, people are talking about how Balotelli would have scored and probably so but Gilardino has been very good with his back to goal.

Italy has more width than they've had at any point this tournament. Maggio and Giaccherini have both gotten forward a good bit more than they would have if they were playing as fullbacks in a back four. Candreva has given them some more width on the right.

The set-up has been perfect, they just may have blown it by not scoring at least one of these chances.

Man, Busquets is so good with the ball.

Damn, typically it's the other way around when the Italians play.
Italy looks like a COMPLETELY different team with Pirlo running the show

They are different type strikers. Balotelli is the better athlete, but Gilardino is a more typical target striker. He doesn't have the fanfare of Balo, but he's scored ten or more league goals in eight of the last 11 seasons. I've always liked Gilardino. His game is rather uncomplicated, but he's remarkably effective at grafting out chances.

Giaccherini played awful during the first game against Mexico but goodness he has gotten better and better. Really impressive performance by him so far.
