Nothing wrong with rooting for Seattle because of Deuce - they have a great thing going up there and are fun to watch.
I love my Galaxy but my second favorite team is Sporting KC because of the personality of their players.
Zusi and Besler are from the current USMNT but they also have Benny Feilhaber (former USMNT), Sal Zizzo, and a bunch of other cool guys.
Have you seen "The Benny Feilhaber Show" on YouTube? If not, check out the latest episode here.
It's hilariously awesome and they "interview" their teammates.

Call BRSA, tell them you want to join an adult team. They'll assign you to a team in the fall, based on your skill level. Don't sweat being a noob, I had most years either with a noob on the team, or BRSA contacting us to see if we wanted/needed an extra player. Hell, I play on an over-30 team in BRSA, and we had a guy who had never played before, but watched on TV and wanted to play because his kids did. He wasn't half bad.
Aside from beginning to follow MLS and EPL (only bc it's easy to watch on NBC), I'd like to do this.
I played growing up and through high school...saw the field for my HS team maybe 20-30 minutes a game (usually first or second off the bench) bc I played for a year in and year out very good HS team. I'm super out of shape now and haven't touched a ball in close to a year or more...but would like to start again. When does the season start and when and where do they play?

Can you formalize a plan that steers the top athletes in the world (US) to playing soccer? You must be able go shell out 10 year, $200mm contracts.
Otherwise, it will be a while.
I enjoyed the ride

I'm the guy this board probably hates.
Not at all. My best advice is to start following the national team. God cup games are fun and the US-Mexico games are as good of an atmosphere as any sporting event you will find.
As far as club the MLS will be much easier to follow next year once the new TV deal takes place. EPL gets good coverage. My advice, pick a team from MLS and EPL and follow them.
I'm a pretty big soccer fan now, but started out much like you after World Cup 90.

I'm in the same boat as you. I have thoroughly enjoyed the last couple world cups and this one the most. I am going to start following soccer more and will start with the EPL. No ties to any team but I'm going to start pulling for Manchester City because my wife and I went to a NY Rangers Hockey game in December and sat next to 4 guys that worked for the team that were in NY observing American sports teams. Good guys and we got drunk with them at the game.
I worked the Gold Cup when it was in Houston in '05 and got to play a match on the field after the game. Also got to escort the Bulgarian National Soccer team around when they arrived at Reliant.

According to this writer, I need to pick an MLS team to support. Research will begin in the near future to find my team.

but would like to start again.
People play pick up almost daily at Urec or PG as well.. Its not organized but people of all talent levels come out.
It can get packed but generally everyone is pretty laid back

I always say I'm gonna try to get into the MLS but it's tough to do without having a local and not having a local team.
I go to Dynamo games here in Houston but I'd be lying if I said I follow the league closely. The games are a lot of fun though. Houston set up the stadium in a great up and coming area with a lot of good bars surrounding it.

buy FIFA 14
I can agree that FIFA helped me as a new fan of soccer. I played with different clubs and found what players I liked in the game then watched them on TV to make sure they were as they seemed. My favorite thing I ever did was ultimate team where I collected all USA players. Got to see their different skills and stuff and learn about our pool of players that don't make the WC rosters.
That was years ago now, but it was a fun way to start if you are into that.
I really follow al USMNT players and watch their games when I can plus I watch Aston Villa my EPL team.

Start watching the English Premier League on NBC Sports. You will never want to sleep in on a Saturday ever again.
This. And start playing EPL fantasy soccer. It's a whole new world, if you're into that...

True make an MLS fantasy team too and you can get right into the MLS season going on now

This is something I was thinking about doing but I played soccer from like 7-10 years old (I am 28 now) and gave up to play basketball. So I was kinda concerned about being a total soccer noob and trying to play since I would have no idea what I was doing. Do you have any contact info for the BRSA? I am sure I could google it.
