Casual Fan's Next Step?

I'm the guy this board probably hates. I just recently figured out what the pitch is, I only knew two of America's players prior to this World Cup, and I have no understanding of the strategy of the game itself.
However, through the coverage of this World Cup, I've heard a lot about growing the game of soccer. I'm a die hard American and feel that I need to do my part to help the US excel in future World Cups. I'm out of shape, so trying out for the team is out of the question, and I don't have a kid to put in soccer.
What should I do? Do I start watching international soccer? Do I start watching the MLS? Do I buy a soccer ball? Is there anything I can do?

Watch everything. You'll eventually latch on to a particular league. I suggest MLS since it's here in the USA and you could catch some games live, but the Spanish and English premier leagues are much more talented.

As a decently casual fan, I plan on following the MLS starting next season. It will be sooooooo much easier to follow with the new ESPN deal.
Brad Davis dominates this league.

I was kind of thinking that. If the country started watching the MLS, there could be some reagonomics trickle down effect.

Most of the people on here follow the English Premier League. I always say I'm gonna try to get into the MLS but it's tough to do without having a local and not having a local team.
But overall, try to keep tabs on our players' club progress and what they're doing.

Start watching the English Premier League on NBC Sports. You will never want to sleep in on a Saturday ever again.

Bradley and Dempsey coming back to MLS really upped my interest. I've been following the league a lot more now. The quality has drastically improved over the past 5 years.

You're really not. At worst, support the NT over the next four years
I would start watching MLS next season (or whenever you see a game now). It's really entertaining, and their TV deal sucks exponentially less starting next year, so you'll actually be able to watch easily
As mentioned, the Premier League is easy to follow. Those who mentioned it can help you better with trying to watch it

one thing i like that keeps me into the EPL every weekend, is that it's not the same time as our other sports... that, plus NOLA not having a team, puts MLS on the backburner for me...
i know back in '10 though we had a big-time friendly against Brazil right after the world cup and it sold out metlife stadium... that was neymar's debut? any friendly in that spot this year?

This WC has been tits on a Ritz! Great show for a non- Footy fan like myself.

I think I will try to keep up with the national team, but I doubt that I will start watching a league outside the US. I guess when ATL gets their team, I will maybe go to a match or two. However, for me it is like downhill skiing. I try not to miss it at the Olympics, but I don't really care outside of that.
However, if the national team plays in summers, that would be a good way to make the summer CFB doldrums go by more quickly. So excited that once this World Cup is over, then SEC media days is just around the corner.

Watch the US internationals with their club teams. Wikipedia can help you figure out who plays where.
MLS has games this weekend.

Call BRSA, tell them you want to join an adult team. They'll assign you to a team in the fall, based on your skill level. Don't sweat being a noob, I had most years either with a noob on the team, or BRSA contacting us to see if we wanted/needed an extra player. Hell, I play on an over-30 team in BRSA, and we had a guy who had never played before, but watched on TV and wanted to play because his kids did. He wasn't half bad.

Did you find a particular player on the team that became your favorite?
If so, find out what league he plays in and what team he plays for and start watching their matches.
That's what I did way back in 2002 (see my sig) and that led me to following MLS when Donovan was with San Jose. I didn't have access to many of his matches when he was in Germany but when he went to the Galaxy, I liked their style and the other players and that became my club.
A lot of our guys are in MLS so purchase MLS Live and start watching the matches.
Bradley - Toronto
Dempsey and Yedlin - Seattle
Besler, Zusi - Sporting KC
Wondolowski - San Jose
Gonzalez - LA Galaxy
Beckerman - Real Salt Lake
Davis - Houston
Then you've got guys who play in foreign leagues but give the MLS a try first and expand to the other leagues.
Oh, don't forget growing a neck beard, buying a pair of skinny jeans, buying a smedium USMNT jersey, get some nerdy glasses, wear scarves, and start drinking PBR.

I don't know how south you are, but if you're ever in ATL, Silverbacks tickets might be worth it at ~$10 for general admission. Parking's like an extra $10, though (it's basically right off spaghetti junction, so public transport isn't really an option)

In the same boat. I feel awkward just picking a team that I have no regional affiliation with or any childhood memories.
I suppose Dallas or Houston would be the ideal choice bc I could make it to a few games(saw Dynamo & Sounders a few years ago while in Houston), but I can't stand Texas teams in general. So I'm torn on following a team.

That's what I was trying to decide as well.
Dempsey is the obvious and Yedlin is really fun to watch and will be great, but I don't want to be that guy that roots for Seattle just bc of Demp.
I like Beckermans style.
Bradley is really good, but struggled a little out of his natural position. But a Canadian team??? Meh
I wish Cameron or Jones or Fabs were in the MLS, bc they were prolly my favorite during the WC
