Are they taught to do this on the pro level? Is the purpose to catch a breather for you and your team? It’s amzing the guys are acting like they are a second from death only to pop up with no sub.

General curious ...not a flame

They are really hurt. Soccer is a tough game and they are tough guys, so they are able to get over the pain quickly.

It’s the worst part of the sport. They’re trying to draw a yellow card on the defender and win a free kick. It’s the epitome of unsporting behavior

It's a combination of things. Sometimes, it genuinely is real pain. Getting your foot stamped on hurts way worse than you think. Sometimes it is to try to get a player booked or draw a foul in a dangerous area. Other times they're just looking to catch their breath. You'll see a team who is struggling to possess the ball try to win free kicks to give their defenders a break.

Some are.

It can be. Sometimes getting stamped on with metal cleats actually hurts. Sometimes you embellish a real foul that isn't painful in order to help move your team upfield.

I can understand exaggerating contact to draw a foul. It's the phony crying in pain while you roll around thats obnoxious

I was pretty surprised how little Spain flopped too

The refs have a done a good job this tournament of ignoring a lot of it and they honestly should be applauded for it

While a lot of it is cynical behavior trying to get a card on the opponent or win a cheap advantage, I think the majority of it is to draw the attention of the ref to a foul. I feel like a lot of fouls go uncalled so they feel the need to embellish to draw attention to it?

I don’t know, when I was first getting into the sport it annoyed the hell out of me, but now I don’t really think about it too much.

It’s a problem in the sport and should be criticized, but while I know this post in particular isn’t a flame, US sports fans that make fun of soccer for flopping are the worst.

Flops and drawing/embellishing fouls are just as prevalent in the NBA and it’s becoming prevalent in the NFL.

Referees are definitely getting better at cracking down on embellishment with VAR. MLS and the Premier League are tough on divers, from what I’ve seen. I’ve even seen MLS issue retroactive fines if they miss it during the game.

I like Soccer more than the NFL and I really don't like the NBA, but it's literally every 5 minutes at least in Soccer. Not saying it doesn't happen in the NBA but the frequencies are still far apart. It needs to be fixed.

Soccer gets a bad rap for guys going down and the popping up like nothing happened. While the same thing happens in football all the time. Guy goes down trainers run out play stops, go to commercial, guy jogs off, and then sits out one play and runs back in like nothing happened.

It happens. People fake cramps to slow the offense down. But there's no way it happens even half as frequently. The theatrics are usually less too.

Luis Suarez went to the ground 3 times in their game holding the back of his head. Replays showed that the opponent didn't make ANY contact with his head. Terrible.

Should be a yellow card minimum

He gets a gold star just for not biting people though.

The theatrics are the annoying part to me. It makes it so obvious they're faking. The ones where a guy actually gets hurt don't involve the writhing and thrashing because those antics would only exacerbate any real pain.

I thought Neymar had a compound fracture until I saw the replay.
