Can you rank soccer(leagues & national events) by highest level of competition

I've always liked national soccer events, i.e. Euro Cup and World Cup. Never could really get into league soccer. Played soccer all year round growing up. I think i like the passion and high level of play that comes from these events. The question is how does it rank v upper echelon leagues such as La Liga and Premier league as far as the level of competition and skill of the teams? After 2010 World Cup i tried watch the Dynamo and it just seemed pathetic. I know the MLS isn't on the other levels but it just sort of kept me from trying to watch other leagues.

This is arguable, but in terms of prestige and global relevancy I would rank them as follows:
World Cup
Euro Cup
UEFA Champions League
English Premier League
La Liga
Serie A
Bundesliga
I suppose that's the answer to your question. Each league also has domestic cups which run concurrent with their respective league play (FA Cup, Copa del Rey, etc).
ETA: I find some MLS clubs difficult to watch if youre not a devoted fan. Houston Dynamo being one of them.
World Cup
Euro Cup
UEFA Champions League
English Premier League

Serie A
Bundesliga

That's probably what I would say. I may put the Champions League over the Euro because it includes non-Europeans, but I'm not sure about that.

Several Europeans rank the Euro over the World Cup, and I believe they have a point when you consider the overall strength of all teams. You don't end up with a New Zealand in there.

I won't even bother to re-hash the Euro over World Cup debate in terms of difficulty. Impossible to compare international tournaments to domestic leagues, imo.

I agree. But I think Barry is looking for club play with similar skill/talent level to what he has seen in this Euro tournament. His only contrast has been Houston Dynamo. And I love that he's given MLS a shot! I think he needs to watch some CL matches next year.

People say that because there can be condensed quality groups, but half the groups were also awful.

No way to compare the passion and intensity of a 3-4 week tournament vs. the grind of a 9 month league season. However, strictly speaking in terms of quality of play the prevailing thought seems to be that top club teams are generally better than top international teams because they are so familiar with each other.
Admirable attempt to watch the MLS but I'm with you in that the standard is just too poor. You should try and follow a top European league or leagues next season and see what that does for you.

Sheep, I agree with your list except I have a few minor quibbles.
Mine would go like this
The top four or five teams in Spain, Italy, England & Germany
The top teams in second tier countries (France, Portugal, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Holland etc.)-The Dutch league has really gone down the past few years. Ukraine and Turkey have surpassed the Scandinavian/Belgian/Austrian leagues long ago.
The top couple Mexican and Brazilian teams-I'd put them ahead of every other group, possibly even some top teams from the secondary leagues
The rest of the teams in the top leagues in Spain, Italy, England, Germany

But the worst teams in MLS would beat the relegation zone teams in Belgium/Turkey/Ukraine in my opinion.
Overall, I'd put MLS on par with Scandinavian leagues and Belgium.

They are MANY MLS games that are enjoyable, just like there are great games and shitty games in any league.
Ever watched a Bolton-Wigan game? That shite is (usually) terrible to watch. Just like a Crew - Chivas USA game is.
I'm watching the replay of the Montreal-Houston game and it's fantastic.
I think too many people say "No Messi, Ronaldo or Balotelli here, must be shite."
I guarantee the LA - San Jose game this weekend will be entertaining. I don't think I've ever seen a "bad" RSL-Colorado match, or RSL-LA match. Don't think I've ever seen a bad Seattle-LA match.

No I don't watch Bolton-Wigan games,unless there is some relegation at stake maybe, because they are boring. Sadly Bolton and Wigan would probably be better than most teams in the MLS which just proves the point further.
