In my humble opinion, nowadays the SKILL level at the club competitions in England, Spain, Germany, Italy is higher than the international competitions. Not to mention the Champions League, which probably showcases the most beautiful football. Also, it is said that football stars don't play as hard in international events because they area afraid of getting hurt, then missing out on millionaire paydays at their clubs.
Now, the most interesting events are perhaps the World Cup and the Euro due to being only once every four years and sponsors marketing the heck out of them. Think the NBA vs Olympics basketball, the NBA is by far better, but the Olympics have that extra "my country is better than yours and will only play you every four years" thing.
If you want to get into league football, your best bet is to start watching in the English Premier League this fall, parallel with the Champions League. Both have great coverage in US with FOX.

Chelsea was a decent team before Abramovich bought them. They did finish 4th the year before he bought the club. They also finished 6th in the two years before that. I've heard that one of the reasons he chose Chelsea was so that he could try to compete immediately in the Champions League.

If you swapped 1 with 2, and 6a with 6b (I know your splitting hairs there) I could go with this ranking.

This is a tricky subject, but I feel like most are going to vastly underrate the Copa America.
There are 10 nations, and literally, all 10 are stacked with Euro club stars.
Champions league, definitely number 1 though.

SEC football but mainly because of the access I have to it, the passion it generates compared to pro sports in the south, and the fact that the SEC is by far as good as it gets outside the NFL. College basketball has become almost unwatchable outside of the drama of the tourney. Nobody except LSU fans ever cared about college baseball.

You're ignoring the dynasties like Texas, Baylor, Cal State Fullerton, USC, South Carolina, and Florida.

You can pretty much substitute SEC for MLS and the statement essentially works.
Barry, in the fall, ESPN 1, 2, and/or 3 may show one or two Premier League games in the morning. For the most part, they are very high quality. A bonus is that it is broadcast in English and the EPL gets the most exposure, so it is easiest to learn about.

And there is NO better way to start a college football Saturday than a 6:45 AM EPL game on ESPN, a 9 AM start on Fox Soccer....... straight into the Big 10 game on ESPN2 at 11.

In 2010 there were only 6 teams that averaged over 5,000 per game and we all know attendance figures are always inflated. High school football is much more popular than college baseball. It just doesn't "move the meter".
