Nobody here really cares either. I've never watched a second of the womens world cup.

We have 330 million people. At some point, you would think that we would have enough people care about soccer and really step up.

This...some of the really smaller countries are very strong.

So the goal is to get more non-Americans on the team so the Americans can win?

Know how I know you don't know soccer? I'm talking about young American kids in Europe. We need to keep identifying teens as stars and making sure they get to European clubs. Eventually, our youth system will catch up.

Because soccer is a cheap sport to play. A lot of the less fortunate nations completely commit to the sport for that reason.

Seems like nobody caring would make it less likely to have one of the stronger teams in the world every cup year.

Yes! With the increase in popularity in the USA, we should only improve. As far as soccer not being the number 1 sport, do you think these other countries would compete with us in basketball our #2 or #3 sport?

20 years ago that was the case. Not so much anymore. Fewer kids are playing football because of concussions and baseball has been regressing for a while. The US has the athletes to be really good in soccer and it's more popular now than ever. I don't really know how you can argue that.

Aren't half the athlete that people like Russell Westbrook, Calvin Johnson, etc. are.

This is the most ignorant argument people who don't know soccer can make. One of the greatest soccer players in the world, and one of the greatest to ever play, is 5'8 and slow as frick. It takes much more than elite Athleticism to be a world class soccer player.

Curious: Why wasn't it said in 1998 or 2006?

That's what I'm trying to do. I know it was an accomplishment to even get out of group play...but I still think it's very obvious the US team is not talented enough to seriously be a threat to win it all.

I can argue it bc soccer fans have been saying this for years and nothing has changed.

Soccer is getting MORE youth to play but they aren't getting the BEST youth athletes. I don't know how you can argue that

Yea but if you identify a great athlete early on, and only let them play soccer, good shite will happen

I was going to start a thread something like "Is it too early for a serious port mortem" but thought it probably was too early. But there seems to be some serious discussion in this thread so . . .

1- Yes we can be talented enough.

2- We obviously aren't right now. Belgium didn't look that great but they looked significantly better than us. We kept it close on grit, determination, Tim Howard, lack of finishing by Belgium (and what turned out to be a good choice to use a direct attack/long ball/counter attacking strategy).

3- The question is not can we ever be talented enough. It is "how do we get from here to there?"
I have some thoughts on it but this particular post is long enough as it is.
