Can the US be a top 8 seed for the next WC

The US Came close for the 2006 (or was it another year) World Cup to being seeded.
Helping us for that World Cup was both our 2002 results and also strong work in qualifying and Gold Cups.
I believe, if I remember correctly, FIFA seeding rankings take a strong look at the previous four year competitive match record. They then take a less strong look at the four years before that. Friendlies are also includes but to a much lesser extent.
So, heading into the next World Cup, we would have - a 2010 group winning performance
- strong 2014 WC qualifying run
- 2013 Gold Cup winners
All counting somewhat less
Then we could potentially have the following (assuming good performances in the next two games)
- Get out of a tough group with games against top teams
- However we do in the knockout rounds
- 2015/17 Gold Cup Victories
- Copa America inclusion, giving us games against South America's elite. Our performance here could give us a real boost.
- Confderations Cup
- Strong 2018 WC qualification run
I guess what I'm saying is - we have the potential for not only some strong results, but with the inclusion of the Copa American and possibly confederations cup, we are adding a decent number of competitive matches against quality competition.
Assuming we win the GC and advance out of the groups in the other tournaments, does this give us a decent chance at a seed? I have to think thats a much stronger four years than those leading up to the 2006 WC.

I think we can and should someday but the others are right about FIFA. If the USMNT got seeded we would likely get a group like we did in 2010 with England, Slovenia, and Algeria. We won that group despite an epic attempt at a screw job. The next time we get seeded will be the next time we host.

I strongly believe the 2006 squad as actually the most talented team we've ever taken to a world cup and sadly underperformed. Also being in the unanimous group of death didn't help.
-Claudio Reyna GOAT
-John O'Brien, injury plagued career, but one of the best when able to play.
-Brian McBride, legend at Fulham, even has a pub named after him.
-Kasey Keller, He's amazing (though oddly enough the only WCs where he was the starter we did awful)
-Tim Howard, back up.
-Steve Cherundolo, Hannover captain to be
-Josh Wolff, never got a great club but he was good and respected internationally
-Landon Donovan, right in his prime; Best US player alive
-Oguchi Onyewu, The Mountain. Freak athlete coming in looking to impress a legit club.
-DaMarcus Beasley, speedester, tearing it up in Holland.
-Eddie Pope, in his career twilight but one of our best defenders ever.
-Carlos Bocanegra, looking to kickstart his Euro career, very promising.
-Clint Dempsey, young 23 year old making the MLS to EPL transformation. keep an eye on him.

I have a feeling that even if the USA somehow gets a top 8 seed we'll still end up with something like Spain and Italy in our group due to how the crazy FIFA rankings always have some European superpowers way too low.

I think it's completely possible. Getting out of the 1st round is crucial. If the Swiss and Belgians did it (Belgians are talented, but they have no points from prior performance), we can, too.
I still can't figure out how the Swiss got seeded unless Blatter just changed the formula for one team and no one noticed.

EASY was right. I doubt the rest of the world wants us to be automatically penciled into the KO rounds.
Hypothetically if we were seeded in this WC and got the same group then Germany would be drawn into another group. If we traded them for anybody the group would be easier. I dont mind a tough group but I doubt FIFA will do us any favors.

We always get the same draw the last few cups. 2 Euro plus 1 africa/asia team. Mexico has drawn 1 European team in group play for at least the last 3 WC. Im not sure about 2002 and before.
