Everything I have ever heard about Brazil has been wrong since I got here. Of course, maybe the police and government cleaned things up, but it has been safe, the people have been nice, and there have big no real issues in Rio.

I think this is a situation where the beatdown was so bad and began so early that people just accepted it and were lulled into depression fairly easily.
