Wood is much better as a central striker. I don't like him playing LW.
He was super physical against CR. I liked what I saw when he played centrally.
If we can somehow get Clint, Wood, Pulisic, and Nagbe all on the pitch at the same time, then I will start feeling better about our offensive chances.

Dempsey at his best is a wide midfielder who becomes an auxiliary no. 10 when he cuts inside. It also allows him to make unmarked runs into the box from deep positions, which is why he scored so many headed goals for Fulham.

I agree that Dempsey is best suited as a wide player, no question. His problem now is that he doesn't have the legs required to cover both sides of the field. He's just not gonna get back and defend pacy wingers like he would need to do as a wide player against talented opposition. And we don't really have the personnel to afford a luxury attacker on the field in a wide role.
So, to play devil's advocate for Klinsmann (which I honestly hate doing but wanted to make this point), I can see that maybe he wants him on the field and feels the benefits to having him on the field as a 9 outweigh his limitations in that role, or not having him on the field at all. That's the only way I can see it.

Dempsey's most useful as an offensive floater, imo. It's a big reason why, in addition to their athleticism and combativeness, Zardes and Wood, two CFs by trade, on the wings makes so much sense.
Dempsey goes right, Zardes can move to the middle. Dempsey goes left, Wood can move to the middle.

Wood seemed to hold the ball too long and had trouble making good passes in both games. I'd like to see more from him. I liked what I saw when he scored, and I like that he tries to be aggressive.
