Chesney played that FK very poorly when he ran into Backalack ,who's now on twitter, btw, and tweets that he is doing fine after being concussed. Who knows when he'll be allowed to play again, though? Hudderfield won't be too much of a test so Eboue should be good to cover him. Hope he makes it back for Everton, though.
Bendtner actually did quite well this game even besides his exceptional goal. He sent in Fabregas for the first attempt on goal, and served up RvP when his header banged off the top left cornerbar.
When he did score his goal the way he took the ball was so reminiscent of Bergkamp's control. That's the best part of his game, imo.
Funny you mention that pass, I was just reading an article where Fabio Capello compares Wilshere's skill set to Makelele and not Pirlo, but that long ball found space so brilliantly, with wonderful pace and accuracy, it was one of the most Pirlo-esque plays he could make.
it's a good read, btw.. He waxes on Wilshere and Theo technique and ability.
Looks like I will unfortunately have to have a vested interest in how England performs now that a significant muscle in their midfield is gonna be so gunner-centric.

"Wilshere is the best young player. He now plays all the time with Arsenal. If you play with Arsenal, you are a really good player because Arsène Wenger likes good players.

That was a great read. Thanks for the link. Wilshere is the future, that's for sure.

I'm amazed he's done so well. Now if he can start bagging goals then he'll be colossal for us, because he does everything else very well.
TEAM NEWS: Squillaci, Diaby, Almunia, Rosicky back in squad this weekend. Sagna ruled out.
Wenger says they have 3 c/backs plus Song and 'we can cope with that.' Vermaelen 4-6 weeks away.

He's got a good shot, I just think he's still feeling his way around. I'm sure they'll start coming. Maybe not this year though...

I actually don't think Wilshere is like Makelele at all. His technique is miles better than Makelele, and his passing in the channels, especially inside left, is superb. I think Capello is being seriously naive if he thinks Wilshere can play by himself as the Makelele player in front of the back four, as he's not a DM by any means, but a deep-lying playmaker. The point that Capello made about Pirlo and long balls refers only to a stylistic difference in terms of team tactics, not a difference in deployment. Pirlo and Wilshere are more closely related than Makelele and Wilshere because Pirlo always has a midfielder behind him helping him with defense and feed him the ball in deep-lying situations, much like the way Arsenal plays, even when its someone like Cesc or Denilson in the deep lying position. Wilshere has as great a passing range of anyone in England currently, though he's not by any means the most prolific passer, if that makes any sense.

I think the comparison was largely to inflate Wilshere up with comparisons to assuage English media and national team enthusiasts. The best way to placate a sports audience is with superlative intra-sports comparisons (I mean...I got a chubby). But he is similar to both in different ways. I doubt Capello thinks he's exactly like Maka, just that he excels in a deep-lying role.

I'd rather he not inflate Wilshere, as the English media is fairly ruthless, and can negatively affect a player's psyche. Wilshere excels in the deep lying role in a completely different way from Makelele, though.

Vela to West Brom on loan.

Nasri is out for 3 weeks (which probably means 5 or 6 in Arsenal-physio speak).
And yes, if you're doing the math that means he will miss the first Barca leg.
Also, we drew Leyton Orient in the FA Cup 5th round. Gives us a good shot to make the QF in that competition.

Arsenal players just can not seem to stay healthy

Nope. Both he and Denilson came up hobbling after zero contact. I'm not too worried about Denilson being hurt though.

Just dropping in to say hello to my fellow patrons of the BEAUTIFUL game, AKA the way the game is supposed to be played.
Just hoping to get some tactical analysis of Arsenal from the most knowledgeable fans on the site for what looks to be a promising tie.

Nasri and Sagna are out of the first tie due to injury and suspension, respectively. Meaning that the score will have gone from something like a respectful 2-1 Arsenal loss to a 3-0 blank.
Luckily we are not nearly as depleted this time around (crossing fingers that keeps up) as we were last season. No Diaby, Denilson, or Rosicky likely to be in our midfield. I hope to see something more like Cesc-Song-Wilshere. That MF trio has been exceptional all year, when healthy. We have played a true 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1, and 4-4-2 at times this season. I imagine we will see 4-2-3-1 in the first leg.
Arshavin's form has been inconsistent. He has been progressing from his slump, but seems to still be off the mark of his best form. Theo and Bendtner and RvP have not been world beaters this season, but they do seem to come up with clutch goals when called upon.
Our GK Szczesny is an upgrade from Almunia in terms of saves and making himself big in 1v1s. He's still not proven himself at commanding free kicks and corners or distributing, but it's still an upgrade from Almunia.
Our back four is a little improved from last year (the main factor being that Silvestre isn't playing). But with Eboue in for Sagna in the first leg means that whoever is playing LF for Barca will have an easier task.
What are the details of Barca these days?

Starting with the back, Valdes has been the Valdes of late and not the Valdes of old, thankfully. He still makes some silly decisions when distributing the ball but his 1v1 play is fantastic.
Our back line is strong and resilient. The only question is Puyol. Puyol looks to have picked up a thigh injury and he'll be out for a few more games, so we've had Abidal playing CB along with Pique; and Maxwell has been filling in well at LB. As big of a fan I am of Maxwell though, i'd prefer that Abidal occupied the LB position because he is extremely strong on defense and he has shown, at least in the last month or so, that he can greatly contribute to the attack. Think of Abidal at LB as Dani Alves lite.
Pique- Puyol pairing continues to be one of the strongest in soccer at the moment with Barca having never lost with those two paired together, at least not this season.
Dani Alves is Dani Alves
Our midfield is unchanged from last year with Xavi-Busquets-Iniesta. Not much needs to be said there I'd imagine.
Our front is really the only area in which is different than last year. We have replaced Ibra with Villa, who can play on the left, right, or center. He's smaller than Ibra, but he's faster and more versatile. What's been happening lately up front is that Pedro will drift out to the right and Villa will play on the left, and Guardiola will play Messi in the center which allows him more space to play in the defense. Pedro has had his most definable season yet, he's just scoring out of his mind right now. We can only hope he continues.
My ideal line-up is:
Valdes
Alves-Pique-Puyol-Abidal
Busquets
Xavi-Iniesta
Pedro- Messi- Villa

Villa on the left terrifies me since we'll be without Sagna. I'm not sure if Eboue is up to that task. Will be interesting to see if Arshavin gets back into our first XI with Nasri out. Walcott will start and he sliced and diced Barca last year. We'll probably need a repeat performance to have any chance.

Wenger comments on today's game and Song's injury:
"I’m very happy today because we won against a good Everton side. We had problems in the first half getting started. I feel we had chances but our game lacked a bit of cohesion in the passing and we lost some balls down to good closing-down from Everton and as well to some technical mistakes.
And today I would say it was more a victory of a team with fantastic spirit and a never-say-die attitude than our usual game. But that of course is needed in a competition like that.
I don’t know [why we started slowly], but we [have] played game-after-game. Sometimes it can take you a while to get into the game. In the second half I think it was all us, and you could feel that any moment we could score. We kept going and Everton dropped in the second half.
[Alex Song] cannot walk. I don’t know what he has got. He was kicked, I think it was by Koscielny, he knocks out everybody in our team. So we have to see how he responds to that in the next days, but he cannot walk at the moment."

Umm...Koscielny is on our team...
Also, Fabianski out for the year with a shoulder op. Looks like its Szczesny's time...
