Yeah I don't know what is going on with the formation. My thinking is that he saw Ozil perform out left for Germany, and thought he could do the same for us here. He gets these ideas after every major tournament. After the 2010 WC we immediately switched to the double pivot even though the 4-3-3 we employed the year before was pretty superb, as the midfield rotation was excellent. Injuries did us in that year, as well as a weak squad overall.
I'm beginning to worry that we will never use Ozil the way he should be. Wenger trying to accommodate everyone in this side will be his downfall. At this point the way he deploys players is less visionary than it is reactive. We bought Ozil to play the middle, and that is the exact reason we didn't buy Cesc back, and suddenly we are playing 3 in the middle and Ozil out wide, which somehow accommodates for a player like Cesc, but without Cesc. It doesn't make sense. Ozil playing centrally also frees up positions for Podolski and Campbell, who will have to play important roles. I don't see how the response to losing big to top teams is to include another midfielder in the middle, when our backs are sometimes positioned forty yards from our CB's. Spacing everywhere is the problem, not just in midfield. It's frustrating that now we are spending money, Wenger makes a silly decision by playing Ozil in a position where he won't succeed and which requires him of all players to track back and defend.

Andre Arshavin says, "hello."

I sigh audibly when I hear his name. I hope Ozil isn't Arhshavin 2.0. But at least Arshavin was productive for 18 months at LW before Wenger made the silly decision to play him upfront, at which point Arshavin saw the abyss, turned his back to it, and, in a fit of Nietzschean whimsy, simply said "No."
We have to get the best out of Ozil, and the simple answer to getting the best out of Ozil is to play him centrally and get runners around him. Ramsey works well, Sanogo actually works well because despite the fact he might be the clumsiest player we've had maybe ever, the mother fricker is willing to make off the ball runs, Sanchez can work well once he learns that dribbling like he does won't work in the PL, and once we get Walcott back and Welbeck in the side, we'll finally have players who are willing to be the outlets rather than the creators. Ozil central also works better than Cazorla central because Ozil is more perceptive in his movement, always moving to the side of the field where there is a potential advantage. Cazorla believes he can dribble out of anything, so he trusts that skill to create chances and keep the ball, but Ozil is so much smarter with his movement, and draws defenders all over the place if their job is to mark him. Keep him on the LW destroys the best part of his game.

he sounded a bit more pessimistic about rambo but seemed to indicate it was a minor injury.

That quote was taken out of context. Wenger said the signing wouldn't have happened if he hadn't traveled that day. It was interpreted as "If I'd have been here, we wouldn't have signed Welbeck." What he meant was, "Because I was up at 6 am, I was the first to be in touch about Welbeck."

Also, regarding Ozil playing on the left, this is an observation I made vs. Leicester and it's confirmed here, but he's really not playing wide left in the attack.
Scroll to the bottom of this long arse image
Note that Ozil's average position is actually narrower than Santi's. It's almost like a midfield diamond in our attack.
Now, I'm not saying it's the right move. I think Santi and Ozil are pretty redundant together and that Arsene is cramming too many CMs on the field. But still, shows what they want from Ozil in the attack.
ETA: Look at our terrible lack of width.

don't think that chart is really accurate bc alexis and ozil switched sides after awhile in that match. tough to get an average position bc of that.

oohh ok i understand now. i was kind of concerned welbeck would begin in the doghouse like poldi is now because wenger didnt approve of the signing. thanks for the clarification

Ah, true. Fack.

it may not be horribly off though. i mean, it's played out a lot like a diamond when we've had the ball for most of the match. i don't love that formation, but we have the personnel to use it.

I'm just trying to grasp at optimistic straws. I'm actually really worried Wenger will stubbornly stick to Ozil on the left and waste a world class talent.

i mean, we have all the pieces for the diamond to work. two forwards with smart movement who have been wide forwards for the majority of their career, a great no. 10 who has intelligent movement, ramsey who could be a world-class shutter in that position (i think that's probably ox's best position too if he improves defensively. not as sure if wilshere fits there), arteta a positionally intelligent CM, fullbacks who are able to provide width...it would at least be fun to watch in the attack if we could pull it off

Wilshere also played the bottom of the diamond for England in the 2-0 win over Switzerland this week. Hodgson may see that as his future role. Had Henderson shuttling beside him, Fabian Delph on the other side, and Sterling at the top of the diamond. And Welbs bagged two goals.
I doubt we ever see it, but y'know, it's been a while since we played and I just wanna talk Arsenal.

quote:The best thing about it is it's ability to transform and interchange between different variations of other formations if you have players that are smart enough and have the work rate. Seems like from the base 4-4-2 diamond, you can turn it any which way to fit your strengths because of the natural spacing in the base formation. Fun to watch when it's all clicking.
