Frustrating loss, guys. I'm usually negative nancy, but I'm prepared to put this one into the "sometimes it happens" category.
I like our road counter-attacking strategy. However, to maximize it, Ozil, Walcott, and Alexis all need to be on the pitch.
Ospina right now has a much more mature game in goal than Woj.
I liked Arsene's subs, though I would have rather seen Rambo rather than Welbz come out.
I like our chances going forward.
And I am amazed at the similarities in the teams I root for and their rivals.
And Arsenal are the St. Louis Cardinals.
The chickens are the Chicago Cubs.
These next 15 match days will bear that out.

I'm all for adapting a new style when away from home and it clearly paid off at the Etihad but it's a bit nuts to let the other side probing your back line the entire game. That was very hard to watch and maybe a bit too defensive for Tottenham imo. Then again, if it worked I'd probably be calling Wenger a genius.
Still believe Arsenal will finish top 4, it's only early February. I'm confident they'll finish above Spurs still too.

Wait I thought Arsenal always beats Tottenham?
That hurts from a guy that chose to root for Chelsea halfway through the season

The tactics were okay, but Theo not being on sooner to push Spurs line back was a mistake. Giroud was worthless with no space for hold up. Welbz should've stayed in and Giroud off.
I didn't think Kane was that good, but hats off.
Also I think this cemented the fact we need an elite DM in the summer. Coq doesn't have the retention skills to help us dictate a game. Ramsey and Santi were also poor on the ball.

I understand, Jabroni.
It's just with the way I called for more defensive tactics when we were short on the back line and getting repeatedly burned, I'd be kinda hypocritical to be damning Arsene for a "too defensive" strategy. It could have and should have worked.
Yes, the Spurs' constant easy possession was frustrating. Maybe we need more of a balance, but I think today strategy-wise was nothing that could not be cured with Alexis back on the pitch.

There aren't all that many elite DM's that can break up play and initiate an attack. Coquelin played fine, but Ramsey and Cazorla were overrun, which shouldn't happen. Wilshere in this game would have been brilliant, as he's superb at breaking the press like Tottenham's.
Tottenham knew what we were going to do, and they were set up to stop us breaking out after winning the ball. The midfield was flooded, and having Walcott and Sanchez on the field would have been a pretty good way of keeping Tottenham honest. Alas, we got outplayed.

We did seem almost a bit too defensive today, but I don't really have much of an issue with that strategy against the better teams.
It seemed we were poised to counter many times only to have a heavy touch and lose the ball just as our guys were releasing.
Days like today happen.

needed to get cazorla more involved when we countered to maintain possession.

It looked as if Martin Atkinson felt he had to throw yellow cards around. It was weird. And when he did, he did a good job of throwing them out with a good amount of disparity.
Giroud took a Danny Rose stamp on the ankle, foul only. Giroud makes very little contact on Derek Mason's follow through and boom, yellow card. Welbeck's yellow was too much. Even Kos's yellow looked excessive. He appeared to slide virtually straight ahead and didn't even extend a leg toward the ball or path of the man. Appeared Dembele just fell into and over him. Very inconsistent to my eye.
It's just a frustrating talking point, not an excuse. Our tactics were clear in the first 5 minutes; Arsenal just couldn't hold on. Still very confident Arsenal finish Top 3 and Tottenham will be visiting some distant Eastern European stadium in the Europa next season.

Oh, I agree.
I can accept this loss in and of itself.
It just frustrates me more when I think of the winnable points we threw away thus far this season.

Agreed on the officiating and random yellows. Seems he threw a few casual ones at the Spurs at the end to even out the disparity. Once they saw they could be more physical and get away with it, it threw us off our game a bit. Really needed Alexis out there to punish them on the counter. We were in a shell most of the second half.
That said, some very winnable games the next two months. Need to put the hay in the barn!

Ramsey was also really wasteful. Been a tough year for him.

I'm not so sure the DCM spot was the problem for Arsenal today, especially in possession. Coquelin was, statistically, tied for the highest rated player on the team with a 7.66 rating. Ramsey and Cazorla rated out at 6.6 and 6.1, respectively. Coquelin won 67% of aerial duels and kept 77% possession when they were in his face the entire game. Ramsey and Caz, on the other hand were on 70% and 75%.
Most of the DCM position's play is meant to break up play, and he did that pretty well. The second step is to make short passes and get the ball into the best playmaker's hands. For a DCM on our team, that's usually Caz, Ramsey, or Giroud (or play a part in the circle of frustration DCM to Per to Kosc to DCM all on the center circle - Rinse and repeat). With Giroud also having a below-average performance and getting too easily bullied, I'm not sure we could expect much more from the DCM position no matter who is playing it.

Coq was good. He's excellent at disruption. I just think we need to upgrade there long term.
Ramsey and Santi were both bad, and Ramsey has been very mediocre this year. All the criticisms of him that were true in the past disappeared last year and showed up this year. He loses possession far too much, he's too fancy in dangerous positions.
He's at his best when he's running, tackling, and bursting into space, while playing simple balls to help us transition from interception to possession. Jack would've been helpful against Tottenham. He's such a better dribbler than Ramsey and can hold the ball and pick up those fouls to help us reset our lines.

Is tomorrow's game not on TV? Usually every game is at least on one of the Uverse alternate channels, but I'm not seeing anything.

Disagree. Ramsey is a better dribbler than Jack because he's more ambidextrous and generally seems more composed on the ball IMO. I also don't really agree with the implication that Jack getting fouled really suits our play. IMO, the last thing Arsenal need is a midfielder artificially holding up play by either trying to do too much rather than pick out a smart pass or trying to get fouled. Wilshere is a great player but not a first choice player right now, even with Ramsey slumping (operating under assumption that Jack is 100% and fully in the fold...should happen by April).

Jack holds the ball in tight spaces far better than Aaron. And spaces were tight Saturday.
