Depends on what you mean by contenders. Pretty much everyone agrees man u will take a pretty massive step back points wise. Last year if you take them out of the equation arsenal would've been a contender along with tottenham, man city, and Chelsea. Arsenal is by no means the favorite nor do I think they're the most talented team, but I think they'll be within 6 points of 1st come April

United definitely won't run away with the title this year, but I still see us as contenders. If I had to pick a top four today, United would be second or third (I flip between United and Chelsea for second place...can't make up my mind).

Y'all are definitely still contenders but considering y'all won last year by 20 points or whatever I think coming back to the pack would qualify as a massive drop off

Every year since 2006 people have wondered whether Arsenal will make the top four. Yet we always do. In three of those seasons we had late season collapses that made us seem closer to fourth than the top. With SAF gone, no manager can get more out of less than Wenger. I rate Mourinho higher than him right now, but Moyes and Pellegrini are mostly unproven at this level, yet people are insistent that we are going to be fighting for fourth?

I've basically ignored all prognostications about Arsenal since 2009, since all seem to underestimate Wenger's ability.

I will say this, I still don't think y'all haterz comprehend how good Kos and Per are individually and as a duo. IMO Sagna-Per-Kos-Gibbs/Monreal is the best back four in the league. at least top two with MCFC. that plus our ability to score with Wenger's tactics makes us at least fringe contenders regardless of any additions. additions would be nice though.

Our ability to defend in open play is the best in the league. It has been for some time under Wenger. Most of our GA is due to set pieces and indivdual errors. The mentality of this team after the 8-2 defeat had to rebuilt, and we finally have a very confident team with no important player coming off major injury, which hasn't happened in a long time. We need some signings, but we need signings that will improve us. A player of Suarez's caliber is actually worth the 40 mil. Lots of teams this window have overpaid just to have someone, so I appreciate the fact we are still working hard to find value in this market.

Agreed. I am quite optimistic about the upcoming season. I like that we aren't just signing a player to look like we are making moves in the window. We will always look for value in everything we do. I love that about Wenger.

It's a blessing and a curse. It's a good quality to have when appropriately used, which I don't think it has been recently.

I'm getting nervous though. I would really love to sign Ginter or a player of that quality. Suarez still feels like a long shot. We just need two quality players to have a really complete squad. I hope we sign someone, before we get desperate like two years ago, which in all honesty worked out rather well for us.

Arsenal needs to sign a top quality player if they want to win the PL this year. The squad, as currently constructed won't do it.

Canebrake, about to get a glass of water. I'm parched!

Very true. I think there will be a signing or two in the weeks to come. Probably players we haven't been linked to in the media.

Yeah, Arteta has been a blessing. We got very lucky with that signing.

I think everyone agrees that we need that one game changer we haven't had since RvP left. Whether we get him is another story.

Being frugal or only looking for the best value are two very important characteristics for a top club to have nowadays. But there still needs to be risks taken and money splashed, which Wenger is too reluctant to do, almost to a fault. You would know better than I, but I'm sure there have been seasons where just one or two quality players would have pushed Arsenal to the top, only to not be purchased because of the transfer policy.

I understand Wenger has been on a budget. But, in this case, spending the extra £5-10m to sign Suarez would immediately give Arsenal legitimate title claims.

Yeah and I think that's what would frustrate me the most if I was an Arsenal fan. Wenger is an incredible manager, develops players well, gets a lot of the players he has, but it's not doing the club any favors to sit on a pile of cash. Y'all have a beautiful stadium and a large fanbase, spend the money, take a chance on an A level player instead of settling for B-, C+ talents.

In that case I agree, although the perceived value of players usually skyrockets when Arsenal is involved. We might have won the title in 2009 if the Chamakh deal hadn't been screwed because Bordeaux suddenly wanted more money after we sold Adebayor. Van Persie gets injured, we play Arshavin upfront, then rely on Beowulf and the title is lost despite having a rather excellent team, on paper.

There is an intersection between perceived and actual value, but until you have the player in your team, everything is perceived value. I wish we bought more of the players we've been linked with, but I'm not hopeful that we'll get Suarez even if we go to 50 mil.

What will probably happen is that we won't sign anyone this window and then scramble in January, overpaying for positions of need.

What he typically does is buy A level talents, rather than A level players. Definitely something that is necessary at a big club, but like you said, a risk has to be taken.

I hope not. We have cash now. Time to splash some around.
