So it's 3 pts for the win. How many for draw? And what's the 5 goals?

One point for a draw.

5 is the goal differential between the USA and Portugal.

Portugal lost 4-0 to Germany today so they are at a -4 goal differential and the USA is at a +1 GD, because we won 2-1.

3 for a win, 1 for a draw.

5 goals is the goal difference between us and Portugal right now. If we draw Portugal (which would be a fantastic result), goal differential is a big deal.

If the Germans win against Ghana and we draw Portugal, it means the Germans win the group and the game against the US is meaningless. They will use subs and not win 4-0 against us, thus guaranteeing a second round appearance for the US team out of the group of death.

Of course, this is all stepping a bit ahead.

Got it. So it's pts then ties are broken by goals?

I can't remember the order (there are a bunch of tiebreakers), but the first two are points and goal differential.

The only way Germany can lock up the group by the end of Game two is with a US loss. With a US tie v. Portugal and a Germany win over Ghana, it would be

Germany 6 - US 4, with three points on the line in the final match.

what happens if Germany wins all 3 of it's games, and Portugal beats the US, and Ghana beats Portugal? USA, Portugal, and Ghana all wind up with 3 points (I don't think this is to far fetched a scenario after seeing all 4 teams play). Portugal would be out of it due to point differential most likely, and the USA beat Ghana head to head, so USA moves on?

It would go to goal differential in a three way tie. If two teams are tied for goal differential, it would go to goals scored.

If Portugal beats the US, and Germany beats Ghana, Germany will have the group locked up and would likely sit some players against the US, especially anyone dinged up.

If the US even ties Portugal, they will play Germany for the Group Title. Germany would need a draw, the US would need a win.

This will be the case in the event of anything except for a US loss to Portugal, given Germany's resounding goal differential, assuming they play to form against Ghana.
