De Rossi arrived in Buenos Aires today.
I know I'm biased but this has to be among the most bad arse transfers for an aging player that I recall. No money grab from China, US or Saudi Arabia etc --- just a pure football connoisseur wanting to play another season for a legendary club and a Superclásico in La Bombonera.

Like I said above, the system he is best for just isn’t used anymore. For almost all teams that play with the intent of attacking use a version of the 4-3-3. It’s just where the game is at the moment.
Liverpool is a good call style wise but I agree with what you said -- he'd be in the same spot now where he isn't a regular in the starting 11.

You can run a false 9 with the 4-3-3. Provide you have a strong 6 and 2 B2B midfielders you can cover up Dybala's defensive deficiencies. Bayern is another good example, they've got 2 good B2B dudes but they need a 6 and obviously Dybala isn't unseating Lewa though.
As for the Douglas Luiz transfer, Villa are seen as more likely to be able to attain the permit rather than City. The rule is that any incoming transfer who needs a permit needs to have played atleast 30% of his national team's games in the past 2 years to automatically qualify (this is designed to be sure any non-EU player coming into the league is quality and inherently forces teams to develop homegrown talent).
If the incoming player hasn't met the 30% threshold, the club must go before a committee and explain why the incoming player is vital to their club. The committee ruled that Luiz would not be vital to City. The hope (from Villa) is that the committee will decide that he is important for their club and thus will issue him a permit.

Thanks for the clarification on the work permit issue.

I’ve been confused regarding Luiz’s work permit for some time. He has been in Spain for the last two years.
Spain has special rules for native born Latin Americans that allows them to gain citizenship, and ultimately EU status, in an expedited two years. Luiz was there for that span, yet for whatever reason this is not noted or even discussed.
I can only assume that something went faulty at some point with that, but the rule is clear that City could have been able to grant him EU/Spanish citizenship through the Girona move. Someone dropped the ball.

Yeah. El Shaarawy move was strange in that he spoke at length to reporters citing all the reasons he was not interested in going to China. Then supposedly ask Roma to come close to meeting his Chinese salary offer, which, unless you play for about 6 clubs in the world, is basically deciding to go China.

Bailly might have a torn ACL. Injury looked bad. Curious if that Maguire deal finally gets done/announced now.

Toby Alderweireld's £25-mil release clause has expired today.
Will probably leave Spurs on a free at the end of the season now.
